Dell Inspiron 15 (3521) is the LCD and the rest of the glass fused

I got very lucky and had a friend donate a dell inspiron 15 to me that she no longer used for school because the screen is broken. It has a touch screen. The glass is broken pretty good and I know if I continue to use it the LCD will eventually break as well. I can't figure out any were wether I need to purchase the lcd and screen together or if I can just replace the digitizer. I don't know to much about computers but I do know with alot of the newer phones and tablets they fuse the screen together. I don't have a separating machine so I would have to purchase a set already fused together if that was the case. Can someone please shed some light on this for me. I'm currently unemployed so I'm hoping I can just replace the glass since the LCD is still perfect. Ty

Take it apart and see if the two are fuzed. Simple as that.

Typically, though, if the seller is selling those two parts together as one component, it's probably fuzed.

I thought about it I just can't afford to buy a new lcd and the screen still works perfect. I don't want to make it so I don't have a computer again. I'm 27 and this is the first computer I have owned

Thank you. That's what I needed to know. It's just so bad that I'm afraid to open and close it because it might break. It looks like someone stepped on it while it was shut or something.

Thank you again. I will wait tell I know I can afford the whole screen before I try to take it apart.

These newer consumer laptops use the LCD as a support structure, so what's more likely is the previous owner put it in their bag, hit their textbooks and that did enough damage to break the digitizer, but not the LCD. On these touchscreen laptops, the digitizer becomes the weakest link and the display usually only breaks if it's hit hard.

Judging from what I can see on Parts People, it looks like it's very difficult to do without replacing the whole assembly. The digitizer is integrated into the LCD bezel on that model, which makes replacement more difficult because all 4 sides need to be removed and you will certainly have to watch out for the cable or you'll be in for a new LCD or LVDS cable.

It also looks like Dell intends the display assembly gets replaced as a single component on this model, but I've found the digitizer new on eBay. The DP/N is 04J3M2 or 0T1CFK if you can find it. This isn't new since HP also treats their touchscreen models the same.

I'd leave it be right now and consider the touchscreen dead until you can afford the assembly so you can still fix the laptop if you mess the LVDS cable up (and potentially fix the old one).
