MacBook Pro doesn´t boot up / display shows colored stripes in blocks

My MacBook Pro 15" Core2Duo 2,2Ghz (bought end of 2007) doesn´t boot up anymore. The Apple Logo is shown on boot up, after the short time there comes a message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."

I already tried:

but it did not work for me. I thing the problem is a hardware fault, but the question is what part of the hardware and is it replaceable.

Thanks for your support

I have a problem too. My MacBook Pro (after I fiddled around with it) only shows my desktop art and screen saver in black and white. How can I get the colour back? Many thanks in anticipation for assistance.

You have two problems. The first is a bad Nvidia GPU. Hook it up to an external monitor and see if the scrambled screen persists. If the problem persists then it's the Nvidia issue which is very well know. Apple will replace your logic board for free and pay for all the shipping. If Apple backs down, then go to www.nvidiasettlement.com for information on the class action suit.

Here's where to contact Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

You will need to be the registered owner: https://register.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebOb...

Next you have either a corrupt system folder or a failing hard drive. Get the GPU fixed first, then we can deal with the hard drive if it's still giving you problems. Apple may fix it for you while repairing the logic board.

I've had a similar problem last week with a MBP, early 2011. MBP was fine except for freezing during OpenGL-intensive work. Then it started freezing immediate upon log-in. Then the screen would become garbled in shivering one-inch vertical stripes. Then it would fail to complete booting. Safe mode, resetting preboot firmware all failed. External monitor was also garbled. Apple replaced the logic-board and SSD and all is well. Noticed today some fraying in power supply; replaced it. I'm now suspecting the root cause was a power/thermal issue. All this happened a week or two after my replacing system DRAM with 2x8 GB Crucial DRAM.
