game pad and console won't connect

Hello

My son's Wii U that is maybe three years old has trouble connecting and staying connected to the console except when game pad is within an inch of the console. It sounds like this can happen often. Is this fixable and where do I start? I'm hopeful to not replace the whole unit.

I appreciate any input you can provide.
