MacBook Pro repeatedly shutting down after battery replacement

I recently replaced the battery for my Mid-2012 MBP using the iFixit battery replacement kit and instructions. Everything booted up without a hitch, worked great for about 2 hours, and then shut down randomly.

I've been able to reboot using my magsafe charger, and then unplug and run off battery power. However, this only works for about 10 minutes before the computer acts as if the battery is suddenly disconnected and shuts down again.

Things I've already tried:

  • SMC reset
  • PRAM reset

Anyone have suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Weird. Is the computer getting really hot? Macs have several internal thermometers and if it gets too hot it will shut down. This can sometimes happen with non-OEM batteries although sometimes the non-OEM batteries are just as good if not better than the Apple batteries. The old MacBook Pros with removable batteries had absolutely awful reviews on the Apple website so I got a non-OEM and it was great.

It could be a Logic Board issue or a RAM problem which unfortunately is soldered onto the Logic Board with Retina MacBooks.

The only other thing I could recommend is backing up the MacBook, wiping it entirely, reinstalling the Mac OS, and seeing if the problem continues. If the problem is fixed, move your files back on.

But before anything else, try opening Console (command+spacebar and type in Console), select "system.log", and search for the word "shutdown". Maybe the logs will show us something.

This is happening to me too.

SMC reset seemed to fix mine though

One thing that helped me was reseating the keyboard connection on the LB.

Same problem here. Would help if ifixit could research and address this please.

I’ve also tried everything to fix it: all resets, full charge, discharge, but nothing helped. Then I contacted the support. They said it is probably a defect and offered me a replacement battery, which arrived quickly. I replaced the battery again (with the simple “cord-technique”), made the SMC reset and voilá - now it works! :-) — if the battery gets very low my MacBook manages to hibernate correctly now.

Thanks a lot to the ifixit-team!! *thumbsup*

Btw. I recognized that in Battery Monitor the "real" and the "user oriented" (=in menu bar) percentage of the battery is nearly the same now (0,5-1% difference). With the defect battery it was 5-9%.

What is the "cord-technique"?

完成的

The "Cord Technique" is used to separate the glue that secures the battery to the lower shell case.

@mandrael : Since the battery is changed on 20 Aug, every morning or even after 2-3 hours of no usage, I have to start the mac I have to do shift control option start. A message shows that the computer did not shut down properly. All programs restart. Chrome has to be restored. What do I do please? The battery is not original but is under 6 months warranty.

I had the exact same thing on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). Installed the new battery, and my computer flips off every few minutes—once right in the middle of booting it back up. Tried and SMC reset twice, just in case I did it wrong. Let the battery completely drain, then charged all the way back up in case that was it too. It would do it regardless of whether the computer was charging or not. Below are coconutBattery readings.

Update (01/27/2019)

Looking at the timeline of posts, it seems like a rash of these happening in the last four months to Mid-2012 MBP batteries, which makes me think iFixit has some manufacturing glitch in a batch of these batteries. Especially since the manufacturing date of my battery is from June 2018, a couple months before the first problem of 2018 was reported on here.

Just checked my battery (replaced recently, has random shut-downs at various charge levels, up to 97%!), and the serial number matches yours EXACTLY. Manufacture date also.

Looks like iFixit either uses the same serial number for this faulty batch, or I just got your returned faulty battery here in Lithuania.

Please download and run Coconut Battery, then post your results so we can get a better idea of what happening with your battery.

UPDATE

Thanks for posting. The battery has 0 cycles. Let it charge completely up then run it down all the way and then recharge. Is this an OEM battery?

Ok, will do, and thanks for the advice! And I used the battery provided in the iFixit kit. coconutBattery indicates that the manufacturer is Simplo.

Hi! I currently have the same problem as you, and my battery is manufactured by Simplo too, do you solved your problem? what did you do? @pwpuleo

完成的

@Rosalin Fira please see the "Chosen Solution" - that's what ended up working for me. My original replacement battery was defective, so I got a new one for free and that did the trick. Almost three years later, and the battery is doing just fine!

Make sure it's only shutting down when on battery power and not when it's plugged into a MagSafe adapter.

Try reseating the battery connector. If it's still having issues when on battery power, then it sounds like something's wrong with the battery cells and they're unreliable. It doesn't happen often with new batteries but it does happen, I've seen then happen even with Apple's own batteries. I'd suggest asking for an exchange at that point.

Same issue here. Also MBP mid-2012. Did you manage to fix it?

Similar issue. Battery works good, MacBook runs several hours. But if it comes to lower percentage it suddenly shuts down instead of hibernating.

Currently the standard percentage shows 86%, but Battery Monitor shows 82%, which seems to be the right one. Can I somehow sync it to the system? I already did a SMC reset. And a calibration.

Same issue. My battery runs very well. It has 7381 mAh (original 6900 mAh) . But the Macbook Pro wont goes standby mode just before cut off the battery power. The battery consumes all its power and the machine suddenly loses its power. This error occured after battery replacement with this oem battery.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Mid-2012 MBP 13” A1278 after replacing battery with iFixit replacement. PRAM and SMC reset did not resolve the problem, only reverting back to the old battery did.

In my case, it was a faulty new battery. Once I got a replacement I had no issues.

Run a power hungry program like a GPU benchmark

if it dies right away the battery can’t provide enough peak current, this is common on aftermarket batteries.

the bms inside the battery does not calculate C rating

Going off the gas gauge data provided, the battery is a refurb unit, new cells re-programmed pcb (current capacity and cycle count are reset, hence why its over 100%)

The cells DO hold X amount of charge BUT they can’t deliver enough current when needed, the same issue is what happens to recalled iPhones recently (that was due to old age but same result)

Just cheap cells….. :)

I think this is happening in my case, but I would need an actual prove to ask for a battery replacement from the vendor.

Do you know if there is another way of proving this problem, except for running benchmarks? Something like a sensor tracker that report live current request?

Thanks

Hey all, OP here. It appeared that my first battery was defective. iFixit was great about sending a replacement, and everything worked great after installing the new battery. It’s been 1.5 years and no issues at all! Apologies for the delayed response, but I hope this helps anyone still running into the issue. Contact iFixit support and they’ll take it from there.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi all. I've tried 3 different batteries from ifixit but they are ALL defective. First 2 died the first cycle, the one I use now works but Mac shuts down at the 20% mark… tired of sending them

My battery came from NewEgg but I’m having the same issues… My MAC runs without issues as long as the power cable is connected… Has to be something other than the battery..
