Power adapter is plugged in. The light on it goes from green to amber, and the lightning bolt shows over the battery indicator. The system report shows the battery is charging. The battery does not charge though. A new battery was installed and the problem is the same.

Alright, I performed both of those operations and the problem has not been resolved.

I disconnected the mag plug, disconnected the battery and disconnected the cable for the mag power adapter inside the laptop. I reconnected the cable for the mag power adapter. I hooked up th power adapter and performed the SMC reset (battery disconnected). I then disconnected the mag power adapter and reconnected the battery. Then I put the mag power adapter back on and started the laptop. Everything seems to be functioning normally.
To recap, the SMC reset only worked after resetting the power adapter plug inside the laptop. I tried it multiple times before.
