Why does my center channel not work?

My Pioneer VSX-821K AVR center channel output suddenly stopped functioning. I tried changing out the speaker wire without any benefit. I also tested the center speaker from other channels and it functions well. I've tried other speakers as well and it's definitely the channel out. Checked over all AVR settings, have the center channel still on and tried it from 0 to +10db without any help. When testing the speaker with the on screen display, the pink noise from the center channel is significantly quieter and crackles instead of having a clear output sound. The center channel is extremely muffled and barely audible when using 5.1 output. Volt meter shows equal output and resistance from the center channel as well. Not really sure what else to do to troubleshoot it other than opening up the receiver itself and tracing the soldering for the central channel from the output.. Any suggestions? Thanks!

@kxn58 "Volt meter shows equal output" what voltage do you see?

Did your receiver come with a sourround audio tester mic? If so, have you tested it?

Hi,

Here is a link to the service manual for your receiver. It is a rather large download, 32.8MB. Just so you know

There are full schematics showing the complete signal path for all the outputs. (p.80 onward) Each path is marked which makes it easier to follow. Like all good service manuals it also has a complete parts list. When you find the problem part (if it is a part), then just 'Google' the part number only and hopefully you will get results as to its value etc. If not add info to the search term such as Pioneer vsx 821K part No. xxx etc

To download the file when the sentence below the Document preview box changes from This file is downloadable free of charge: ...processing... to This file is downloadable free of charge: Get Manual, click on the Get Manual. This is the download link. Be patient, it takes a little while to find the file.

Here are some images as an example of what I mean.

Hopefully it will be of some help in tracing the signal path to find your problem.

Actually managed to fix it in the end somehow by just opening up the case and tapping the connections for the center channel. I think it was a solder point that was loose, but I decided upon opening it that it would be a significant undertaking to re-solder loose connections. Ironically the tapping seemed to resolve the issue. Prior to that, it was reading equal voltage and resistance out from the center channel as the side channels. I believe it was just a connection signal output issue, as the power was there, just not the clarity and expected volume.

Hi,

If it is a dry joint, it will be back.

The voltage reading may have been there because of the pressure (light as it might have been) being placed on the connector by the Voltmeter test leads when measuring, making the 'loose' connection come good, but releasing when the 'pressure' was removed. You did say 'tapping' (light touch) fixed it.

You said 'barely audible'. A dry joint could be high resistance not necessarily o/c so the majority of the signal voltage would be dropped across the joint and would not be delivered to the speaker.

Just a thought.

I just diagnosed this problem on my VSX882k. It was a bad mute relay on the output of the INPUT board, NOT the mute relay on the AMP board speaker outputs. The input board basically supplies the line level outs to the power amp section. Same issue, center channel drops in output, sounds distorted. Sometimes if you crank the volume, it will work again, but only temporarily. Powering it down and back on occasionally works too. It opens and closes the relay, and sometimes it closes properly. The relay part number for the VSX822k is HL3-2A-12S. I would not be surprised if that's a common relay part # across the VSX series of AVR's. The only place I could find it in the US was on eBay, and it's coming from China. I got ten of them for $16 w/shipping. Hope this helps someone.

EDIT: On the 822k schematic, it's RLY 402

Hello would this relay part work on my pioneer 1124-k reciever? I have EXACTLY the same center chanel issue.
