The screen (itself) seems to be tearing apart

Dear iFixit

Within the last week i have noticed that the screen of my Macbook Pro 15" from late 2008 seems to be ripping itself apart on the backside where it is connected to the main body of the mac. Please see the attached picture.

The screen is still working though.

During the past 8 years it has been dropped and the corners of the backside of the screen got slightly bend, but no critical damage. It is a long time since i last dropped the macbook.

What is the obvious solution to this problem? It is an old mac, but it has been upgraded over the years and still performs very well. I would like to repair it if possible.

Best regards

Anders

I've repaired several of these. Before I go into it, please look and tell me if the problem appears to be coming from a break in the frame on the left side about one inch up from the bottom left corner of the display.

Hi @mayer , the frame has no breaks. It would be very nice if you can guide me to a solution! Thanks!

The lid on this is made up of 2 parts; the back aluminium lid, and the frame which the LCD, hinge and glass is attached to.

On the 2008-2010 (especially 2008), the glue they use to bond the frame to the back lid is not very strong, and softens when heated. The main area the frame is held to the lid (bottom corners) is exactly where the heat from the inside of the MacBook gets exhausted, therefore softening the glue and over time separating both parts.

The only proper solution is to replace the lid, but honestly I would not bother. There are a few "new" lids available, but they are extremely expensive (£300+) and it will likely develop this issue again. Used ones will definitely develop this issue at some point. I have heard of some companies modifying the 2011+ lids (which don't have this issue since it is all one part) to fit the older 2008 parts, but I have not used/found these myself.

If you can't find a modified frame, I would just sell it on eBay for spares, or live with it until it gets worse.

Thanks for a good answers!

Do you think it is dangerous to use the computer as is?

Also would it be possible to re-glue the parts together with a strong adhesive like epoxy or similar?

@andersaa it will probably get worse, it is possible to glue it, I haven't attempted this myself. I have seen lids from MacBooks sent to me, where another repair shop has obviously glued this, but it usually doesn't hold.

Well since it was dropped I'm going to assume that there is no valid warranty. With out looking it is hard to tell if the LCD frame / case is bent and now separating or if there is some other issue like loose screws allowing the screen assembly to come apart. There are parts available. You can look on Google for laptop parts suppliers or on eBay. Keep in mind that this device is considered vintage by Apple standards. I believe they go by a 5 year life span. Because of this you might not be able to find new parts. If your not willing to invest in parts and labor you can replace it with a unit from Powermax.com. They sell used units, you might find the same model with a little more memory or a faster processor. You might be able to get a model a couple years newer and just swap out hard drives.

Thank you for your answer! The warranty has run out many years ago unfortunately. Seems to be the adhesive that is not bonding anymore as Reece suggest. I will see if I can repair this somehow, if not I am going to buy a new mac i think.
