Slow Internet on Windows 10

Hello,

I usually connect my macbook 3.1 in University's public network. When I run MacOS, I've no problem. But, when I use Windows (10), the network receiver seems really slow.

This happens only with my university's network.

On MacOs: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/56927...

On Windows: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/56928...

Is there any idea?

Can you give us some more info here. Like what is the Mac OS version you are using, are you using BootCamp or some other VM service, How much memory do you have and how big is your HD and how much free space does it have.

It's MacOS 10.6.8. There are 4gb of RAM and 128gb of an SSD ROM. Windows 10 is installed via bootcamp.

My opinion is that network's settings are not appropriate.

How much free space is on your 128 SSD? That will have a big bearing here.

Available on:

-Windows: 24gb

-MacOS: 33gb

FYI I snipped your personal data from your network info as you don't want that out in the wild ;-}

Surprisingly Mac OS uses real memory for most of its network processes unlike Windows which needs a Paging file.

This can be a problem when you don't have a lot of RAM as well as a small drive with little free space.

So what to do here?

I would boost the RAM up to the max this system can support 6 GB. I would also look at clearing off as much as I can from the drive you have here. As its a SSD you do need to leave at least 1/3 of it free so the drive can wear evenly. If it doesn't have this space it can prematurely fail. To help you see the SSD's condition I would recommend using this: DriveDx If you go to their web page its cheaper!

For cleaning things you should also clear out the old cache & log files as they can choke the system. Here's another app which can do that for you: Disk Doctor. There are others and if you are skilled you can also do many manually vs using the app.

Once the system is cleaned up you should see performance improvement. If couldn't clear off 1/3 of the drive then you'll need to look at getting a bigger drive or look at getting an external drive. Given this systems age you should think about getting a FireWire drive, while you still can use USB drives they are only able to use slower USB rev 1 performance which is quite slow.

Here's another great tool which can help you see whats happening with both your drives & RAM usage as well as other performance elements: System Monitor under OS-X.

One of the problems when running multiple OS's Is one often needs to see things in both worlds as such you should also look for tools within the Windows space. Something like this should help: System Monitor II

Both systems are healthy and great-performanced. There is nothing to do about RAM or system. Everything works fine! I want be clear because the problem happens only when I'm connected to my University's network. So, it's may related to DNS or to a wrong setting.

Perhaps the issue is between mine's old adapter and University's conteporary one (?)

You have a newer version of WiFi here: 802.11n so I don't see how what the Univ. has for WiFi would make a difference between the two OS environments. Yes, there is a newer version of WiFi 802.11ac.

The only thing would be the WiFi's freq. being used and that also gets into were the AP is in relationship to where you are: 2.4 GHz Vs the 5.0 GHz bands. 5.0 GHz connections are faster but don't travel as far or through walls as well as the slower 2.4 GHz bands.

The last thing, would be if you are using a VPN then I could see the tunnel connection could be taking a long route. As an example I'm in Boston. But lets say I'm in New York the distance between the two is not very far but our VPN is via Chicago so it would need to go there then back to Boston! A very long trip. So the connection can be very slow.

I know you have a strong feeling here the health of your system is good. I've seen this before and have had to do some deep cleaning on quite a few systems and for some add in more memory and storage.

Lastly, you would need a newer system to gain 802.11ac services within the system directly. You could try using a USB dongle but this systems USB port is quite slow so I'm not sure that would help you. That only leaves the Ethernet port which you could plug in a Ethernet to WiFi bridge but thats a lot to carry around.
