How to unlock fn key?

My fn key is pressed by default, like when adjusting the brightness of the screen (fn + f1) I just need to press f1. I tried all the solutions posted on the internet ( hold fn + various keys or press fn for 10 secons) to no avail. How to unlock this key so I can use my f1-f12 keys without pressing the fn?

Have you considered that maybe it's a problem with the hardware?

It worked a week ago though. I haven't tweaked my iBook that much so I don't think that is the cause of the problem. I tried resetting the PRAM, still the fn key is reversed.
