Replacement HDD not recognised after boot of external OSX

Hello

I have replaced and old Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD (clicking and not booting) with another HDD of exactly the same type. When starting the machine again I couldn't get past the white screen. I used the option (alt) key and could not see the new HDD. I could hear a faint sound of the drive trying to load but couldn't see it. I couldn't use the disk utility function as I couldn't get to the drive. I can run the machine from an external USB with OSX on it but the internal drive is useless. I use the apple symbol in the top left corner of the screen and ask for the storage option but it only gives me the USB and the optical drive.

1) Has the old drive damaged something?

2) or is the new drive damaged also?

3) Do I have a sata cable fault?

Thanks in advance for your help

Boot from the USB drive go to Disk Utilities and format the new drive. GUID and Mac OS X extended. Then see if you can see it and install a system. You cannot use a system older than what the machine shipped with.

Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.6.1 (10A2155) Maximum MacOS: Current*

Thank you so much for your answer. I have tried exactly as you suggest, however, when I go to disk utilities the hard drive is not showing. There is a low tone emitting from the machine as if the hard drive is trying to start but I still can't see it. The tone stops after about 5 mins and then stops. Its like the drive is powered but the sata cable is not showing the drive in the disk utilities window.

The problem is you don't know if its the machine or the hard drive.

You'll need either an external 3.5" enclosure or a universal adapter to hook up the drive externally to test it.

Here's the adapter: Replacement HDD not recognised after boot of external OSX

Here's the external boxes I've been buying lately: http://www.ebay.com/itm/371315192473?_tr...

Then boot from the flash drive and see if you can do anything with it. If, when you finish you can sell either one on eBay if you don't need them. But I like the box as you can put in a slow hard drive (cheaper) and use it for a Time Machine backup drive.

Hello Mayer, I have purchased a Seagate caddy. I then used it to try and drive the HDD externally. I was enable to get the HDD to be recognised by the computer. I am sending the HDD back to the supplier for a replacement.

Thanks

@simon - Simon it sounds like the drive you got is a SATA III (6.0 gb/s) drive which won't work in your SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) system. I think you'll find this is a better fit: Seagate Desktop SSHD. Unlike your other drive this drive can run in a SATA II system. Here's the drives spec sheet: Seagate Desktop SSHD spec sheet note the line: SATA Transfer Rates Supported (Gb/s) this is what you want to see for any drive you do get. It will also give you some zip over a regular HD.

Thanks Dan, I appreciate your response. I thought I ordered the correct HDD but like you I am now not sure. I will investigate the SSHD and see what price they are.

Thanks again
