Where abouts is the sleep sensor?

Hi

My MacBook Pro goes to sleep when in use. It seems to be worse when cold but that is only a generalization as sometimes it flickers on and off like a strobe light after it has been in use for several hours. I have run the Apple hardware tests and this returned no faults. I took to a Genius who found nothing wrong and recommended I book it in with them to do seven days of triage to find the problem (unfortunately I have to work for a living and can't easily arrange that much downtime).

The problem never happens when plugged in to an external monitor and the lid is shut, but does occur when plugged in and the lid open to use as a secondary or mirror display.

I do not have any magnets next to the computer whilst working but assume it is the sleep sensor/reed switch.

I would be grateful for advice on the location of the sensor and replace-ability, or other suggestions to the cause of the problem.

Thanks!

I don't remember exactly on this model but there are usually one or two magnets, depending on the model along the outer edges of the display that control sleep. Use a paper clip and run it along the sides of the monitor to see if you can locate them. Has the screen been replaced or the glass? The magnet may have slipped in a fall or lost if a replacement was done. I'll be working on a 15" 2011 display today and I think uses the same display so I may be able to improve this answer later on this evening.

Thanks for getting back to me. The screen has not been worked on at all. I have run a paper clip around the screen and there are magnets on the left side directly above the SD card reader when the lid is closed. There are also magnets along the top edge on both sides about an inch in and about 2 inches wide. I suspect it isn't a problem with the magnets as the problem only occurs when the lid is open; it goes to sleep fine if I close the lid, unless it is plugged into an external monitor when it behaves as it should.
