unresponsive shift and control keys

The left side shift and control keys on my 2012 macbook pro are unresponsive. What might be the reason for this? Should i take it to a shop, or can i repair this myself? How expensive might it be to get them repaired at a shop? Thanks.

Hi, thanks. Back to the seller at ebay it went. A lesson learned. Don't buy Macs from unknown, unreputable sellers. I wanted to save money, and it would have cost me more than a new one, to get it fixed. Back to square one. I'm on budget, I'd like to find a Macbook Pro between $600-800. I may have to go with a 13 inch.

I have a similar problem with WORN OUT keys on a MBP model A1286, my solution was to get a replacement keyboard for less than $30 at eBay ( http://www.ebay.at/itm/301720172145 ) ... although I am still looking for instructions of how to replace my keyboard myself :(

IF the problems are from a spilled sugary liquid, it may be even possible to disassemble and CLEAN the keyboard and Upper case without needing any replacement parts ... although this seems to be a very difficult job, better done by professionals which might cost you as much as a entire new Upper case for up to $300 !

Hi,

as first try to reset NVRAM:

Command-Option-P-R Reset NVRAM. Release the keys after you hear the startup sound again.

If there was any liquid spilled over the keyboard, you'll need to replace it and if you're not confident enough (its a bit complicated), better bring it to the repair shop.

Regards,

Kris
