Why is doesn't my Mac or iTunes recognize my iPod classic?

I just got an iPod classic 30GB. It works. However, when I connect it to my Mac for the first time, the iPod says "Do not disconnect" the entire time. My iTunes or Mac doesn't recognize the device. I tried rebooting it a couple times. I tried putting it into disc mode. I updated my Mac. Nothing works. Can somebody please help me?
