Smoking has a lot of causes. A bad pvc valve is the most likely. It will be in the hose between a valve cover and the intake manifold. A another common cause would be a stuck choke valve in the carburator. Just replace the pvc valve. The choke a little WD40 usually does the trick.

This really sounds like the choke. If you take the air cleaner cover off and look inside. The hole will be closed. That sheet of medel is the choke. When the engine is cold it is closed to pull more gas into the carburator as the engine warms up it opens. The makes the gas air mixure leaner(less gas) and the gas milage is better and less smoke.

White/Gray Smoke: White exhaust smoke is an indication that coolant is burning in the combustion chamber. These are possible causes:

Cylinder Head: A crack in the cylinder head (around the coolant jacket) will cause coolant to enter the combustion chamber.

Engine Block: A crack in the deck of an engine block near the coolant jacket will cause coolant to enter the combustion chamber.

Head Gasket: A damaged or blown head gasket will cause coolant to enter the combustion chamber resulting in white/gray smoke coming from the tailpipe.
