Screen not working. What to look for inside?

My MacBook got a small impact, and since then the screen has not been working.

1. The chime/sound plays, but the Apple logo does not appear and the screen remains black.

2. When I plug in an external monitor using HDMI the Apple logo and login screen appears, but when I log in, it freezes during load.

3. When it freezes during load, the actual screen on the MB Pro lights up (lit up black, as opposed to before which was just nothing).

4. Booting in safe mode, I was able to get past login screen and in to OS X on the external monitor.

5. Booting in recovery mode, I was able to re-install El Capitan (using external monitor), but it does not improve.

Probably a cable inside has just gone loose, right? I just bought a screwdriver set to open it, but I am not sure what to look for, or where to look.

Any advise?

What happens when you plug in an external monitor? Are you able to see the desktop and your files?

OK, so we know the system is functional. What likely happened here is the hard drive was in the middle of a write function and was not able to complete it. So the master boot blocks are corrupted.

Do you have an external bootable drive to see what happens when you boot up under it? You'll need to run Disk Utility from the external drive to fix this.

When I plug in an external monitor I am able to see the Apple logo upon startup and user selection screen. However, when I enter password and login, the computer is not able to get past loading user settings and gets stuck.

Except for when booting in safe mode, then I can succesfully log in - but still only on the external monitor.

Hello Dan. Thanks a lot! However, I just installed El Capitan to a bootable USB (using http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/16/make-os-x... but with El Cap instead of Yosemite). However, when I boot and hold down "C" in order to boot from external device, the screen is just black. Also on the external monitor.

The "C" key goes to an internal optical drive. Try holding down the option key to see the available boot drives. I would also try reseating the display cable to the logic board. Disconnect the AC adapter & battery before working on the board and ground yourself out to avoid any ESD discharge. Just touch the center screw of an electrical outlet or radiator, water pipe, etc.,

Alright. I tried using the Alt key now, and the dialogue appears on my external monitor. What do you suggest I do from there? I just tried "first aid" on the hard drive, as well as erasing it and installing from clean. The install can not be completed.

Ouch! Not good ;-{ Sounds like the drive is beyond hope here. As you can boot up the system externally we now know the system is AOK except the SSD. At this point I would visit an Apple Store to see if this drive was on the recall list or covered under warranty.

Look for any cable that appears to be connected to, or should be connected to, the display. To me and my limited experience it sounds like either your monitor's cable was severed or just pulled out a port. Open it up and look around for anything that doesn't look as it should; that's really the only valuable advice I can give you.

Hello Paul. Thank you for your answer. However, nothing looks out of order. It appears that every cable attached to the monitor (top left or top right) are in place in their respective ports.
