How can I install OS X on a new ssd

I want to upgrade my macbook pros hard drive to a ssd but I don't want to use a back up as the ssd is going to be 250 gigs compared to my current 5400 drive that came initially with 500 gigs that has 226 gigs left on it. How can I do a fresh install of 10.11 with the new ssd in without a backup ? If you are wondering why I don't want to restore from a back up its cause the backups are too big and would fill the new drive full.

great how to video for installing macOS onto mabook pro

I've seen videos on Youtube but they require backing up the OS on another hard drive or thumb drive. Can I do away with that, and just follow this procedure?

I have problem with installing macOS on my mid2012 MacBook Pro. I formatted the new ssd and when I try to download MacOS X via Internet recovery I always get the error: Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X. What can I do?

First thing I would do here is make sure your systems firmware is upto date. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. You might have something still newer depending on your OS version.

  • Hint: the last digits (after the last dot) are hexadecimal so you'll need to convert it to decimal to know if your systems version is newer or older than the T/N. Mavericks and newer OS's have firmware updaters within the OS installer.

You'll need to get a SATA to USB adapter so you can connect your SSD externally to your system. Here's one unit: Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter for 2.5" drives.

With the SSD plugged in to your system you'll need to run Disk Utility to partition the drive with GUID and format it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition.

The next step is to download from the Apps Store the OS installer.

Run the installer selecting the SSD drive it will install a fresh OS onto your SSD. Once done you'll want to double check if it's working correctly. Restart the system and press the Option key so you can select the SSD as the boot up drive. If the system starts up you can then shut down the system and swap over the drives. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Replacement.

"...The next step is to download from the Apps Store the OS installer."

Questions: Does the downloaded OS installer end up in your Applications folder? Then do you run the installer from there, but choose the newly formatted SSD as the install destination instead of upgrading your old OS on the internal HDD? Thanks.

完成的

Yes, the OS installer is placed in your Application folder. You'll want to copy it to your desktop or another folder as the installer in the Application folder will self erase after you run it from there.

This gets a bit confusing here as it depends on what you want to do. First make a full backup of your stuff (TimeMachine) On another drive. If you are swapping out your current drive and want to save your stuff you'll want to have both drives connected to your system. Then run the Installer to first formatting your new SSD and then install the OS (hint: use a new user account name). At the end it will ask you if you want to migrate your user accounts, Apps and data over. If you want to limit what is transferred either clean things up before hand or limit your folders as you want to move over.

I would strongly recommend you also replace the HD cable and place some tape under the cable that rubs against the upper case.

In my case, no external connection was needed at all! Placed the SSD without formatting or partitioning it first. Then started the machine in Recovery Mode (so hold Command + R upon turning it on), which works! You can then immediately use Disk Utility to erase/format and partition the disk if necessary and to install the OS, all you need is an internet connection. Hassle is non-existent!

Depending on the OS-X /MacOS release you have installed you might not have the newer hidden recovery partition or Internet recovery options. In addition if you use cloning software the often don't carry the hidden partition over to the new drive.

This method is actually how I replaced the 2.5” HDD with a Crucial MX500. Just plug it in, close up the laptop, turn it on, and wait a bit. Worked flawlessly a couple months ago when I did it.

This way worked for me - Macbook Pro 2012. I just took out the old HDD, put the new SSD in and booted with CMD + R

Will this actually work? I have bought a 1TB SSD, but I am unable to create a time Machine to my external HDD as it is a different file system, and I cannot format it as it has important data.

Also right now I cannot buy a SATA to USB cable due to COVID Lockdown imposed. I also want to replace my CD Drive with the current HDD in my MacBook.

Just a note if you have problems.

Apple will replace the hard drive/IR cable on this particular model for free, no questions asked.

Don't make the mistake by insering the new SSD straight out of the box.

OS and disc formatting need to be done first.

I wanted to install a new OS into a mac mini and had no previous useable HD. The way I successfully did it was:

  • Connect SSD via SATA cable to a Mac. (SSD icon shows on desktop)
  • Disc Utility - Erase SSD, then partition SSD and give it a name.
  • Insert flash drive with bootable OS ( icon appears on desktop)
  • Click on OS icon. Disc Utility / Install OS then select Show all disks
  • Click on new SSD and install.
  • When cooked, remove SSD from Mac and insert into mac mini. Then boot up.

Phew!

Hey dan.

After I instal the macOS on SSD from external case. Making sure is runs normally. I swap the internal HDD to a new SSD I already installed. And my MacBook Pro just stuck on Apple logo.

But, when I boot from HDD external case it runs normally.

Classic case of a bad HD SATA cable if you are swapping the HDD for the new SSD! Here's the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable following this guide MacBook Pro 13" Unibody 中期2012 硬盘线缆替换. You also want to place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over to help protect it from abrasion. In addition, you want to be very careful where the cable needs to fold. Don't crease the cable! Instead bend it into a nice arc. Use a bamboo skewer or a ballpoint pen ink straw to help you roll the bend around.

I think the SATA cable caused this issue too.

Thanks Dan.

I did the way you stated above but in the recovery mode. After formatting it and making it GUID partition for my current SSD, I tried to reinstall macOS Mojave.

After 10hours+ of waiting, 6 hours before completion, it stated an error 702.

Do anyone knows why? I have tried all ways from using Carbon Copy Cloner, time machine back up recovery and migrating assistant.

Nothing works! I have MacBook pro mid-2013

This following error: the operation could not be completed: com.apple.OsinstallSetup/error.error 702

It looks like you hit the expired certificate issue as described here: If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

Here's the fixed OS installer How to upgrade to macOS Mojave

Lastly, don't use cloning software! Apples new APFS file system won't work correctly if cloned and frankly cloning software won't properly setup the drive either as a bootable drive and copy over the recovery partition.

What if my MacBook Pro can no longer access the App Store? I dropped it once and it hasn't been able to download updates since. It's no longer supported by things like Netflix or gmail etc.

Could I do this work on the SSD using another apple computer and then install it on my computer? Furthermore, can installing this SSD solve my problem?

Hi. I want to instal a new SSD Drive on a mid 2012 MAcbook Pro, but because the old hdd had 750GB and the new SSD only 250GB didn’t managed to do the cloning on the new one (even though it was erased from all the extra things and the old HDD had only 5GB busy. Anyways, i’ve connected directly the new SSD and formatted accordingly entering the Disk utility, and having access to internet connections via the house Wifi. So it connected to apple server and was starting to instal de Lion OS, but surprise…wasn’t showing me any disk connected to the mother board. Does anyone knows what i am doing wrongly?

PS: Before you are wondering, the computer is not for me is for my mom to have access to skype and google, so she is new in this and doesn’t need high spec computer
