Why is my MacBook Pro freezing?

Hello,

my MacBook Pro is freezing randomly.

First of all I tried a new EL Capitan installation and I was repairing the hardrive, too.

Then I did change the memory and I did use another hard drive but the problem still persists.

Also I did a PRAM reset and SMC reset, but nothing changed,

Then I had the idea to boot into safe mode, in the safe mode the MacBook Pro didn't freeze. So I did all the steps found here, but the problem still persists in the normal boot mode.

Does anyone have an idea to solve the problem?

Can you describe what is working and what is not when the system is frozen. Does the display its self react oddly? Does the mouse point still track across the screen? What application were you using at the time and is it a different application also encounter the problem.

Thanks for you reply. The system freezes after a couple of time and nothing is working. I can't use the mouse point anymore. It's nothing more than a frozen screen. Then after a minute of freeze the Macbook Pro has a black screen and I can boot it again. I think it has nothing to do with applications. If you want to I can take some pictures of it.

What kind of applications are you running when this happens Games, watching vids, surfing the web ... ? Does it happen when the system is doing nothing? FYI: I'm thinking hardware issue but need some more to isolate what to focus on.

The system crashes when it's doing nothing but it crashes when I'm surfing the web for example, too. Even when I'm trying something out in the terminal it's crashing. There is no special point or application which let the system crash. It's happening randomly, mostly between 2-15 minutes after boot up.

If it runs fine in Safe Mode but not with a regular boot, you have a software issue. You can get viruses off the internet or via email attachment. They have gotten very sneaky. Look in your downloads folder and question ANYTHING. Most Macs I get in nowadays are infected. Or have things like Genio or MacKeeper.

To verify, reformat the drive, use the "Write Zeros" option to map out any bad blocks. Reinstall the system via a flash drive, external back up drive with a system or via an internet install and see if you problem is gone.

Take it to an ASP and have the logic board tested for this recall.

Thank you for you post mayer, but my problem since I've reformatted the drive and writing zeros to it isn't gone. I think it is very difficult to verify the real problem. Personally I'm at a point where I think it is a hardware issue. Probably the Motherboard has a defect.

I am having this same issue. Did you ever find out if it was a motherboard issue?

I am in the process of checking my video card. I have a MBP mid-2009 version and my computer freezes randomly throughout the day no matter what I am doing. I've tried upgrading my RAM, a new hard drive, and a updated OS (Lion to Maverick). I did each "possible solution" one at a time to see if any one would fix the issue and nothing. I just read a thread that stated they blew the dust off the video card and that fixed the issue.

Let me know if this helps.
