Why can't I install OS 10.3 in this clamshell?

This machine (192 MB RAM) is currently running OS 9.2. Works beautifully. I have updated it with Firmware 4.1.7 update. Verified it as its Boot ROM is now 4.1.7f4. I booted off a cd 10.3 installer but after a few minutes of hard drive activity, I get a kernel panic. Tried it several times, I get the same result. Sometimes, what I get is a message that tells me I need to reboot the computer, blah blah blah, etc. I know this cd works. And 192 MB RAM maybe small, but it should have worked. What gives?

Are you sure you are using a retail disk (black) and not a machine specific (gray)?

I could try resetting the PRAM. When you turn the computer on hold "Command[Apple]+Option+P+R" all at once, and keep holding it until it makes the boot noise twice. THen try and run the installation again.

Thanks, Chris. But resetting the PRAM did not change anything. Sigh

Yes, I'm sure the cd disk works, because I used it to install 10.3 in another clamshell weeks ago. Sadly that clamshell got inundated by a flood. It was a total loss, the water corroded many components inside. Mayer, thanks for the link. Although the Apple article mentions Powermac G3s as the affected models, I suspect a few clamshells were also involved. Thanks to all who responded.

Try replacing the ram with the ram from the other G3.

Yes, I've already changed RAM, even tried the 512 MB stick from another clamshell. Still no dice.
