What is this stain inside my display?

Block Image

Block Image

Hi guys,

My Apple Thunderbolt Display has a stain from inside.

How I can fix it? I really believe it's on the glass as I took a screen shot of this area and the scree shot show pretty clean I mean, no stain at all. Does it make sense?

I'm afraid to remove the glass before to be 100% sure.

Tks a lot,

I suspect you have some fine dust caught between the cover glass and the LCD display unit. The static electricity tends to collect it there.

Sadly there is no guide to walk you though the steps. But there is a Teardown, It should give you enough help to pull the cover glass off (up to Step 3). Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown. Make sure to use reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol with lint free wipes to clean the glass.

Hi Dan, thanks for helping me. I did what you recommend and I'm afraid that didn't work. Actually I didn't use reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol as I didn't have. I just cleaned it with those screen cleaners. Man... I'm so upset with Apple. That shouldn't happen... Do you think the reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol can be the solution? Can I also use it on the LCD panel?

Did you pop off the cover glass and clean it on the inside? You need as pure a cleaner as possible as anything in it will leave a mark. Be very careful cleaning the display. Apple uses a sticky roller so as not to scratch or leave a mark.

Yes, I did this time and the problem is still there. I took the glass out and I kept the Display on, and it's clear the problem is on the LCD panel, not on the glass.

It's a shame apple is not the same anymore. I'm very upset about that. Only this month I had 1 Time Capsule dead, 1 MackBook Air with Airpot Card replaced, my display now and my IPhone also sucks... Anyway, thanks a lot for your help. Take care,

Did you also clean the LCD? I use a very clean feather as I don't like touching it as it tends to spot from the finger oils and solvents. You may want to get a pair of surgeons (sterile gloves) to help minimize the oil marks.

完成的

If you are going to use surgeons gloves, make sure you get the powder-less ones. The kind with the powder will create more problems then they will prevent. Also, use LCD cleaner on the screen front, not alcohol. Alcohol is a solvent, not a cleaner, and not good for the polarized film on the LCD.

Change your screen color to white for a week or so and it will be gone.

Brilliant!! Thanks so much! I had a big smudgy mark in the centre of my screen. Just about to give up a morning's work and drive to the Apple store when I saw your suggestion. Ten minutes white on black the mark is basically gone, and has now disappeared as I write this message. So grateful! Additionally, it's given me the surreal experience of putting my computer 'in the upside down' like in Stranger Things, and I've just done it to my boyfriend's screen for a little joke :)

Thank you! This literally was the solution, forget about the other people saying you have to open the monitor up, I did it and cleaning the internal display didn't work, wasn't worth it for me to go through the hassle of cleaning the backlight too, tried this before doing that and it worked! THANKS

Trying to sort my screen with a creeping water stain type mark at bottom right corner. Sorry for sounding stupid but what do you mean by changing screen color to white and how do I do it? Thanks

What do you mean by "change your screen color to white"?

完成的

Brightest color to warm up that screen long enough for the condensation inside the monitor to dissappear!!

Can you give the display a rest for a week or so, where it isn't being used at all?

I've had this same exact problem, a creeping something on the right side of the LCD. It has even grown over time.

But today I plugged in my Cinema Display after a week or so of not using it, and the crud is gone. After about half an hour it still isn't visible.

After a couple of months I bought the Cinema Display 27 second hand I started noticing the same streak / stain on the screen. I decided to open it up and tried different things like cleaning the LCD assembly, air blow the fan, or change the kapton tape in the back of the LCD asssembly but only to find out that none of this was the problem, as no dust or condensation were found (i cleaned it like 3 or 4 times with isopropyl and a microfiber cloth that came with my LG TV, and the process was a pain in the ass).

Then I noticed that this mark was very noticeable after a couple of hours of use when the display was hotter because it gets get hot, but it gets even hotter when it’s been used intensively, like watching a movie or playing a game, so I totally discarded the dust / humidity option apple has been giving.

The way I somehow managed to work around this problem was:

  1. Charge my computer with the Macbook charger, not the display, as it used to get hotter where the power supply its located. I remembered that during the first couple of months I didn’t have this problem (or at least I didn’t notice) because I was waiting for the magsafe to magsafe 2 adapter to arrive, so the problem basically started when I started charging my macbook with the integrated cable in the display.
  2. Disconnected every USB peripherals in the back. I had it crowded, like the 3 usb ports were used, my iPhone, a little usb fan and numeric keypad. I know it might seem like its not too much, but every watt counts to avoid the display getting hotter.
  3. Put a fan directed to the vents of the display in the right side. It is a mini fan, with AC, not USB powered. It keeps it cool by constantly blowing air inside the display.

At the moment the stain / streak is there, but is definitely less noticeable and the display rarely gets hotter again, just regular hot / warm. I know that this also might be a problem of the fan, I’m waiting for a replacement, but right now they’re not really easy to get where I live, so I guess I’ll have to wait and try that.

Another thing I read is that maybe some of the LCD diffusers might be slightly burnt or damaged, but I don’t know if its even possibly to repair.

I hope it works for you.

The dust, which makes the display cloudy actually is at the back of the LCD panel and on the backlight panel. It is possible to remove the aluminium panel case and open the LCD assemble. I used cotton cloth and a mixture of ethanol and denaturalized water (1:4) to clean those panels. Tricky it is, as there is glue and tape and magnets which try to confuse you. If you are careful and bring some engineering talent with you it is no big deal. Try to not bend cables, everything else is quite robust.

good luck!

I used to have the same water stain on my Thunderbolt Display. It was huge. Today I just realized that the stain (that was clearly visible) is gone. Can’t tell how it went away. My guess is that my screen saver did not start one night and the display was on for a full 12 hours on a white web page. Maybe that’s what repaired it. Anyway.
