Fan is running constantly

Hi,

I have a mid 2012 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro that was running absolutely fine till last 2 years. Just recently it is creating problem like the fans of the laptop run constantly even under normal cpu load and temperature. I have tried every possible guide and way to fix it but just couldn't solve it.

Then I ran the hardware test and found out the following error:

4SNS / 1 / 40000000 : Th2H - 127.875

After little bit of googling, I found out the error code referred to sensor related problems. Important to mention here, I live in Bangladesh where apple does not have a direct store but 1 - 2 authorised retailers and service providers. So I took my laptop to one of the authorised service providers w/o any delay and they told me I have to change my logic board as there's no other way to fix it. And changing the logic board will cost me hefty usd 1200 approximately which is a lot for me.

So can anyone suggest me what to do now. Is the error code really refers to replacing my logic board? Is there any way to skip the replacement? I mean is there any way to control fan by any app? What best I can do now?

I will highly appreciate if anyone gives me an honest opinion.

Thanks.

Thanks for the ellaboration. But what is the solution for this? Do I really need to replace my logic board? Please do suggest.

For now please un-accept my answer until we hear from Old Turkey on a possible repair.

Hi oldturkey, even I can understand that I need to follow through Apple, but does that heat sink problem really refers to replacing my logic board? Thats all I have been asking to find out whether my local Apple authorized service providers are giving the right solution or not. Another thing, if I can't get help from Apple (which is more likely possible since I can't travel with it to another country), then what would be the option for me to survive with this machine? How about ysing the mac fan control app to control my fans since the temp sensor can't seems to control it anymore due to the sensore failure? Plz help :(

What you need is a "Flat Rate Repair" from Apple. It should cost about $320 US. plus some shipping. Since you don't have an Apple Store in Bangladesh, I would call the one in India, here: India

Let us know if this fails and some of the guys on this site might be able to figure out a work around.

+ Most likely the best solution. I would not have thought about sending someone to a near by country for service, something for me to add to the grey matter between my ears.

Thanks for the suggestion. Apple india would also ask me to bring in the laptop by myself. But what I am asking from all of you specialists is really replacing logic board is the only solution for the problem? If I use mac fan control app and try to control the fans would that be a problem for the laptop?

Ahmed, I live 300 miles away from my nearest Apple Store. There is an Authorized Service Provider in my city which I seldom use except for warranty service as they are my direct competitor. Apple allows me to deal directly with them. The Books get shipped 520 miles (837 KM) away. I think you are assuming that you would be required to bring it in yourself. Who cares how it gets there? Ship it to me and I'll send it to Apple, the extra shipping would probably cost about $110. I FedExed one back to Macau last year for $55.

Thanks mayer, I'll take ur advice and will call the apple india as the authorized service center here in my country is only suggesting no other way but to replace the logic board. I'll reply to u here as soon I get a response from Apple india.

1st off I would suggest following Mayer's advice. His advice is the correct and safe way to solve your problem. If that is not possible, no, replacing the logic board is not the ONLY solution. Using a "program" to adjust the fan speed may be a solution, although it still may cause kernal panics or other problems. All these sensors talk together and communicate with the SMC. There is a risk of causing further problems by not doing things "the Apple way". There could be more than one issue causing the fault code, the fault codes are derived by a triangulation of multiple sensors. Sometimes a faulty temperature "error code" can actually be caused by an incorrect voltage reading on another part of the board and/or other things. Try a program that corrects the fan speed and monitor your system logs. Let us know the result. Information helps us, help others, at this point you are one of the others.

IF you want to use a fan control app, I use SMCFancontrol.... Works great.
