Failed GPU Apple Program or Other Repair

I got in a MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz A1226, EMC 2136. It appears to have a failed GPU. It will boot into target mode. I get nothing shinning a flashlight through the screen. Nothing on hooking up to an external monitor. I did a search on the Apple NVIDIA program but did not see a list of serial numbers for affected units nor do I know if Apple is still covering the issue. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

My question is:

a. how would I find out if this one qualifies

b. if unqualified, is this a simple solder job

c. if not simple, who is a reliable repair source

UPDATE - I finally broke down and called Apple with the number machead gave. The serial number matched their records. They are FedExing a box for overnight shipment. No credit card was required as Apple says they will cover it. Congratulations on passing Microsoft today Apple. I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.

Had it back from Apple in two days with a new motherboard, no charge. Way to support your products Apple!!

Does anyone remember the effected range of serial numbers? Nvidia took down the page where you could check your serial number last May with a notice that says:

"THE CLAIMS PERIOD IS NOW OVER AND WE CANNOT ACCEPT NEW CLAIMS.

The deadline to submit a claim was March 14, 2011. Claim forms may no longer be created or filed.''

In sure Apple will follow suit shortly.

they never listed the serial numbers that I remember, just the models.

Have you seen this?

From March 29, 2010 Resolution

If your MacBook Pro is exhibiting any of the symptoms listed above, please take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Before visiting the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store, please make a reservation (available in some countries only).

Apple is issuing refunds to customers who may have paid for repairs related to this issue. Please contact Apple for details on the refund process.

  • Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed.

You ask hard questions and are very adept at using the net so I wonder if I'm wasting your time but here goes.

a. From what I can find out the genius bars have a program/device that can tell if it qualifies

b. I would think not-- I believe it will need to either have the GPU replaced or ball grid reflowed

c. This is one company I found on the net that seems to have a good reputation but I can't swear to it.

As far as i know the extended warranty for faulty NVidia chips in MBPs runs out in a couple of month - at least here in Germany. Certified Apple shops have a little app that shows in a minute if a machine qualifies for extended service. So off to your local Apple vendor rightaway ;-)

Nearest Certified Apple Shop is 320 miles (515 K) away. Texas is big. Do you know where I can get that app.?

Sorry mayer, they won't give away this piece of software - too afraid of the big bad apple.

完成的

Yeah, it might cost them if people found out they had bought a defective product. Kudos to the bean counters.
