Will installing the headphone jack really solve my problem?

I was following the comments on installing the iPhone 3G Headphone "Jack"/socket. I would be glad to exchange the socket, as I have fixed other iPhones. I was just wondering about the comments made that some have exchange the complete assembly only to find that the symptom persisted.

I have cleaned the socket channel with compressed air, just like the Apple store does, but the problem keeps occurring intermittently. Sometimes several days go by without symptoms, while other times I can not make a call with out earbuds and the built-in mike.

In fact the main symptom is that during a phone conversation suddenly I can't hear anything, because the phone "thinks" that a headphone jack has been attached.

The remedy often suggested, besides cleaning the socket channel, is to insert the jack repeatedly with a swift removal action. This has not been a remedy for my phone. This just works sometimes.

When I put the headphone jack in, I have also noticed that the iPod app often starts up automatically. When pressing the volume key the display will say "ringer (headphones)", even when no jack is inserted.

The problem occurs randomly and intermittently, and is naturally annoying when it occurs, as the user experiences missing and interrupted calls.

I am just curious, if a replacement did not solve the problem, what else could be done that has been overlooked.

Thanks for any and all input.

Olivier

since the volume keys are connected with the same ribbon cable as the headphone jack - the problem could also be a bad connection or a fluid damage. i (and i mean I) would disassemble it and chek the connection to the logic board - check the headphone jack and i would also clean the headphone jack (in my case with a special electronics cleaner)

Well, this is very old but I have the same problem.

This still happens after I replaced the headphone jack assembly with a new part from ifixit. I don't think this can be water damage, if so, it is due to moist in the air because I never got it wet... Anyone has solved this?

as you mentioned yourself, this is very old. The problem on here is that it does not function like a usual forum. Your question actually shows up as an answer to this old question. If you need help for your iPhone, best ask your own question. Click on the link on the right hand side of this page "Ask a question" and give as much detail as possible. Good Luck
