Refrigerator Will not dispense water after replacing filter.

After replacing the filter on a GE Profile PFSS9PKY French Door water would not dispense. I put the old filter on and it worked fine. I have tried the Ge brand as well as another brand filter and had the same result. I followed the directions for filling the filter first with out success. The fridge would make a hammering noise only with the new filter which would then stop however no water would come out or sometimes very little water would come out at first then nothing. After a couple months with the old filter I tried again with the new filter and now water will not come out with either the old or new filter.

thanks funshine45 that was the solution to my problem! I thought all these other solutions sounded like over kill! After a new filter installed on a refrigerator that was working fine - both water and ice suddenly needs all these parts replaced and a repairman (and a big bill!) that would make a fellow never want to change water filter again!

Make sure you check the nipple where the filter goes. if it's not getting all the way pushed in you will get a trickle of water or nothing.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Proper alignment is the key. I actually had to un-tighten a bit to get the water to flow.

I found the problem to be that I screwed the replacement filter in too tight. By unscrewing the filter counter clockwise ever so slightly, the water flow resumed back to normal.

I bought the HDX filter for my Samsung fridge from Home Depot. After a few minutes, the water completely stopped. Like some others here, I had to loosen mine a bit and water started flowing again.

I think I am going to skip 3rd party filters from now on.

Water Tube in Door is Frozen

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working the water supply tube in the door may be frozen. This will be difficult to track down. Look for a connection point at the bottom or top of the door, try removing the hose and blowing air through it and out the dispenser. If air passes through, it's not frozen. If not, thaw it out. and determine where it froze in the door. Most doors are foamed in with a sleeve the water line goes thru to the dispenser. The freezer temp should be kept from 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too cold the water line in the door may freeze.

Water Inlet Valve

If the water dispenser is not working the water pressure from the house might be too low. Water inlet valves require a minimum of 20 psi to function properly. If the pressure is good and the water filter is good, replace the water inlet valve.

Low Water Pressure from House Supply

If the water dispenser is not working the water pressure from the house might be too low. Water inlet valves require a minimum of 20 psi to function properly.

Water Filter

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working the water filter might be clogged. Try changing the water filter.

Door Switch

If the refrigerator water dispenser is not working, the door switch might be defective. When the freezer door is opened the freezer door switch does two things, it turns on the light in the freezer and turns off the ice and water dispenser. If the door switch fails the dispenser will not turn on. The switch can be checked for continuity with an Ohm meter. If it doesn’t have continuity it should be replaced.

I had the same "hammering" problem. For me, replacing the new filter with the old still produced the same results. It turned out that the water pressure was too high for the filter. Tried a great value MWF filter didn't work but for maybe 2 seconds of full pressure. noticed the inside part is different from the OE smartwater mwf filter, tried ge mwf filter and it didn't work. Pressed the switch on the valve and water went all over. Created washers out of a cereal box, put inside top of filter and it worked. Old filter was working but slow flow, new filters wouldn't work. Not a 100% fix but all 3 filters were different inside where it mounts and triggers the switch to let water pass. Fridge 12 years old, filter is like 8 years old (not mine) and the new filters don't get made by the same specs as the "GE SMARTWATER MWF" filter used to. Could be bad filter mounts or problems with the valve switch. Leaning more towards bad filter specs as I can get sprayed heavily activating the switch by hand with no filter installed! Perhaps a new valve for a new fridge from 2016 with a filter for that would be best option. OR perhaps never buying GE or any off name same manufacturer fridges would be!

Hi, Wanted to share my solution that worked. Best of all, it just costs as much as a water hose washer !

I had the same exact issue after I replaced the water filter. Returned the original GE one, and got another GE one thinking it was a defect in the filter. That did not work. Then also tried a generic filter from home depot. Even that did not work. So it was clear it was not the issue with water filter.

I agree that the issue is with the filter head assembly. You can either replace the filter head or do a cheap fix by using a water hose washer. I got this idea after watching this YouTube video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjShdHoi...

Though he mentions to use a metal washer, a simple garden hose washer will work as good. Check it out. The video provides more information and shows about the part in the filter head that needs some extra push. A washer in the filter can do the trick.

I am very glad this worked and also to know the root cause of this problem. This appears to be a common problem and one definitely don't have to replace the filter head each time.

This worked for me, too! The easiest fix of all!

完成的

This was the correct fix for us. As pointed out in the video, the filter assembly has a tiny "wedge" that must be fully pressed in for the filter system to work. It seems that new filters, even official brand ones, either do not fully press this "wedge".

We bought garden hose washers at home improvement store. Make sure the inner cut-out is wide enough to go around the nozzle in the filter assembly.

One final comment: We bought rubber garden hose washers because it seemed like rubber was "better" than metal. However, after a week of the filter working, the noise and lack of water pressure returned. Upon removing the filter, it was clear that the little "wedge" had actually made an indent into the rubber washer. So I think a metal washer (possibly combined with a rubber washer) may be the real way to go. So a thin metal + rubber washer would probably be the best or just a single reasonable width metal washer.

Thanks to the original poster for the easy and cheap fix!

I am surprised by some of the answers that are posted.

Here is the problem and how to AVOID it.

The filter head assembly has a nipple sticking out in the spot that water will come into the filter. This nipple will be pushed out by the water pressure behind it to stop the water coming out when there is no filter mounted.

When you mount the filter it will push that nipple in slightly and allow the water to flow through your filter, in this process you can damage that nipple and it will not be pushed in, so water will not flow(or flow is reduced) unless you change the filter head assembly.

Solution: before changing the filter shot off the water AND eliminate the water pressure by turning on a cold water faucet.

This way your filter will not damage the nipple in the filter head assembly.

I have purchased 3 new GE - GSWF original eqp. filters to replace a spent filter that was still flowing fine. None of the new filters provided water flow. Replacing them witih the old filter allowed water flow again. The only explanation for this is the new filters have not been manufactured to the original specifications, and do not depress the switch far enough to activate water flow. GE is noted to have manufactured replacement main boards that are incompatible with other electronics within the refrigerat;or. It makes me suspect they may be deliberately trying to sell either service or new appliances when the customer thinks his refrigerator is ageing and will continue to have issues.

With someone dispensing water (or trying to) I very slowly decreased the pressure by closing the valve until it stopped "hammering" and began to dispense water. I over-shot a few times adn had to keep adjusting until I found the most pressure without the ill side effects.

I just went through this hair pulling problem. I changed my filter and little to no water pressure. No its not air in the lines ,No its not freezing lines,No its not low water pressure in my house. If you put your old filter back in and it still has no pressure ,its no the filter "makes sense". I shut of my water line to my fridge and removed my filter. I looked inside and saw 2 small little tits that have an "X" marked shape, The centre one was filly out but the outside one was partially out. I you depress both of them they bounce back cause of spring pressure, The correct term "Check valves" possible one way . Any ways what i did was push the one that you think is not fully extended in and out maybe 20- 25 times with a long screw driver or a coat hanger. If you have a long pair of needle nose pliers handy grab the "X" valve and push in and out while turning side to side at the same time"keep in mind this is a plastic valve and could be damaged very easily" Hope this helps. Install your filter and turn water supply back on , this should do the trick.

I've read a lot of solutions to this problem. Here is the foolproof solution. Put the water filter bypass cap that came with the fridge back in (or buy a new one on Amazon). The water will now flow freely, but won't be filtered. Pull the fridge away from the wall and install an in -line water filter. Not as convenient as having the filter in the fridge, but there are a lot of different brands available and some of them last for years. Good luck!

Manufacturing defect??? The fact that the old filter worked every time I put it back in made me believe the filter was the problem, not the fridge!

Go with the washer (or at least try it first!). It’s simple and cheap.

As pointed out in the video link above, the filter assembly has a tiny "wedge" that must be fully pressed in for the filter system to work. It seems that new filters, even official brand ones, do not fully press this "wedge".

So a thin metal + rubber washer would probably be the best or just a single reasonable width metal washer or a hard plastic washer.

Check out the “slight” indent in the first rubber washer. It was much more pronounced right after removing it from the filter assembly (picture taken about 4 days after we switched it). We fixed the filter again by using another of the 10 rubber filters we bought but I’m willing to be in another week or so, we’ll have to either swap that one out with another “new” rubber one (or rotate or flip the one currently in the filter assembly). Hence, my suggestion to use a metal or “very hard” rubber one.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried the remedies listed above. I think something has changed in the manufacture of the filters in recent years such that the filter is actually putting up too much resistance to water flow. When I try to fill the filter from the sink, It's tough to get water in or out. It just pools in at the top. The only solution may be to simply re-install the bypass plug and find another answer for the filtered water my family enjoys.

I had the same problem with a Samsung and the technical support dept said I must have used a cheap Wal-Mart replacement filter but they were wrong it was a Samsung.

After a year of not being able to filter my water I realized that I had removed a restriction on the supply side which would have increased my flow/pressure.

So I turned down the valve behind the refrigerator reducing pressure during a lower flow rate and it has been working ever since.

In my case, with a Samsung refrigerator (French door), this was a defrost issue. Water would flow fine with no filter, but with several brand new filters , it would not flow (or would flow briefly then stop). I have the rf263. Unfortunately , I've had nothing but problems with it. I put it in "fd" mode for 30 minutes, which melted the ice build up, and then the filter worked after that. Also the defrost helped clear my drain , since I had to install a modified piece which allows the defroster to actually melt ice in the drain. I know that the drain was clogged, because I had water in the crisper tray during the defrost. Why I would have to use manual defrost mode is beyond me. Samsung just makes all around garbage refrigerators. I know the original post was for ge, but a search for this problem for Samsung led me here.

Hi.

I had exactly the same issue.

After reading the comments here and looking at the write up in the package, I figured it was probably the water pressure going.

1. I located the water valve controlling the water going to the fridge.

2. I increased the water flow to maximum.

3. I told my son to try to get water from the fridge while I was decreasing the water flow.

4. Then at one point he said the water is now flowing.

This didn’t work for my GE Profile side-by-side. I had to do the opposite of what you mention above. I started external supply valve in “off” position and slowly turned up while wife monitored flow. If pressure went too high, it would cutoff and wouldn’t recover by simply decreasing flow. We had to repeat this multiple times from “off” until we hit ideal flow (about 40% open).

Next time around, I’ll just use the bypass and purchase an external in-line filter.

I had the same problem. When I remove the filter, it would dispense water. Based on the comments and solutions suggested here, I thought the filter was defective so tried it out with four new filters - all same results. So realized it can't be the filter.

So when the filter is removed, there is a part that looks like a plastic tray (it seems like its there to collect water when adding/removing filter). I tried adjusting that. I was able to push it in and out..so I pushed it in and then replaced the filter..and somehow it started dispensing water.

I am not sure if that fixed the problem or something else, for now I am afraid to take the filter out to prove the theory..but will try that when I have to replace the filter again.

For now I am good.

The hammering is caused by a damaged cartridge filter. Specifically, the plastic weld holding the inner section of the filter to the outer section breaks free when the filter is installed over the refrigerator's water outlet nipple. I believe the root cause of the problem is a combination of poor filter design (the weak weld geometry) and the slight swelling of the nipple's O-rings that occurs over a period of time as the rubber slowly absorbs a small amount of water. The swollen O-rings cause a high force to be exerted on the filter's weld joint during installation. Through a Venturi action across the broken weld, air gets sucked into the upstream side of the filter element. This element does not easily pass air, thus the reduced flow due to a vapor-lock condition. The hammering occurs as a result of the dynamics of water flow, Venturi action and pressure on the loose inner piece. Eventually enough air gets sucked in to completely cover the inlet surface of the element and prevent any water form passing through.

The fix is twofold: replace the filter, and replace the refrigerator's outlet water nipple. I would apply a thin film of FDA-rated silicone grease to the O-rings of the nipple. This will ease filter insertion and retard swelling of the O-ring from the water.

My problem

Replaced the filter in my KitchenAid fridge with a new one - specifically, "EveryDrop by Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter 4 (Pack of 2)" from Amazon. It worked for a day or two, and then the water stopped flowing, accompanied by a very loud, annoying, disturbing jackhammer sound. In addition, upon removing the filter, the refrigerator's filter head (i.e. the "nipple") would leak water non-stop until either a filter or bypass plug were inserted, creating a big mess.

I called a repairman. He inserted a bypass plug, and the water ran fine. Because the bypass cap was long ago lost or thrown away by someone, I could not test this myself. He concluded that both of the filters I bought were defective, charged me $120, and went on his way. This smelled bad, but I had no information with which to counter the decision.

My partial solution

At the suggestion of someone here, I put the filter in a bucket and filled it entirely with water, forcing out all the air within. The effect has been threefold: first, the jackhammer noise can now only be heard for a couple seconds, then it goes away; second, the water now runs, albeit very slowly; third, when removing the filter, the filter head no longer leaks water. I'm very grateful for the latter, because now troubleshooting is less messy.

So, I've decided to live with the crappy water pressure and brief jackhammer sound. Between the overpriced OEM filters, the "repair" job, and a replacement bypass plug, I am about $220 in the hole. I'll wait until the filters give out before trying to contend with this problem again.

My conclusion

This issue is all over the Web, and I do think the most common cause is a bad product. Simply replacing the filter shouldn't break anything, but it does. I don't have a technical explanation for the issue, but it could not have been a coincidental, simultaneous failure of the refrigerator, or my home's water system. It must be a problem with come kind of interaction between the fridge and the filter.

After re-inserting the cartridge in sideways in my hand with the thread ears sideways i imediatley heard the water start filling the cartride and thats when i finished pushing in and turning clockwise untill locked in. Filter then dispensed perfactly. Boom done.

So what worked for me was to untwist filter slightly once fully seated then re tighten and repeat to process a few times until you feel a slight increase in tension. I'm assuming the rubber gaskets are making a better seal.

I had the same problem, no water flow after replacing the filter. Tracked my problem down. The supply line I used has an "anti flood valve" built into it. The little bit of water hammer after the filter change caused it to active. The solution- unhook the water supply at the shut off valve (which resets the valve) then reconnect it. Problem solved. I now have water!

I suspect most new refrigerators have some form of similar protection. Hope this helps those that have this problem in the future!

I just spent 2 hours on this problem and finally found a fix.. The real solution is to replace the water filter mount because more than likely, the water inlet nipple is broken. It was mentioned in another solution so, I decided to check it out with a mirror and found out that it was crooked. I took the part out, after checking everything else, and saw that it has little wings that were supposed to keep it straight, allowing for it to be pushed to let the water flow into the filter. If it's not fixed, after the pressure builds, it slides off to the slide and closes again. So, the proper fix is to replace the mount... but I snipped off a tip of a plastic fork and used it to keep the nipple straight; re-mounted the mount; attached all the water lines I had disconnected; hooked up the new filter (GE MWF); and turned on the water... it worked!!

So, the short of it... turn off the water to the fridge. Unplug the fridge. Disconnect both water lines that go to the filter and the back, top cover where they go in from the back. Now you can take out the mount and replace it... or flip it over and find a way to fix the nipple... your choice...

Mitch—I thought I would have to try that or call a repairman. Found out there was a stupid piece of styrofoam up above where the filter goes. First, you have to remove the cover over the top of the water filter. If you find styrofoam, remove it. That’s all I did, replaced the filter, put the cover back on, and now I have WATER! No more hammering sounds or no water from the dispenser. Companies should tell people about packing material that should be removed from the frig! Calling GE tomorrow to let them know about this. No need to buy new parts, unhook the frig, etc. Just a stupid small piece of styrofoam was the culprit.

Had the same issue and couldn’t get it to work. Old filter would work fine new one would hammer and restrict water flow. Last restort I compared to new & old filter side by side and noticed that the small tab below the dispensing nozzles on the new filter was a bit longer. Nipped a bit off the end of the tab to make it shorter and it worked ! Basically the tab on the new filter was preventing the filter from completely installing fully! Hope this helps !!

Hello. I spent a few hours on this "jackhammer" issue as well. I have a KitchenAid KFCS22EVMS model. In summary I used the "washer" solution approach. Simply, I used a standard rubber washer and put it in from the two "tits". I submersed the filter in a pitcher of water and waited a few minutes for the bubbles to stop. When I installed the new filter (as per instruction), I heard a release of air. I tried the water and no more jackhammer sound and the water flows nicely. What a relief!

It is so simple. if you have replaced the filter with the right filter, then just unplugged tehr refrig and plug it back. That way it reset the filter to flow the water!!!!!

Hi! I just replaced my water filter today on my side by side GE refrigerator. Same thing!!! Loud hammering sound and NO WATER! I finally decided to remove the housing cover for the water filter. I was determined I would fix this daggone thing. Anyhow, I found the culprit!!!! I pushed up above where the water filter goes and noticed a PIECE OF STYROFOAM!!! I wondered why I was able to get water with the original filter but not with the replaced GE water filter. I suppose they put that styrofoam there when the refrigerator was delivered. Anyhow, I removed that piece of styrofoam, and put the NEW water filter on and put the cover back on and, VOILA, PROBLEM FIXED!!!!! I NOW HAVE WATER COMING FULL FORCE FROM THE DISPENSER!!! I’m going to call GE tomorrow to ask them WHY they wouldn’t tell people about that piece of styrofoam. It’s such a simple fix; but, seeing how many other people are having the same problem, I thought I would let you all know! HOPE THIS HELPS!!! Good Luck!!!

Manually push it in until you hear a soft "bang " I had to do it few times until it started dispensing water.

Before I did what I explained above, the only time the refrigerator was dispensing water was when the old filter was on, or when there was no filter at all. I was without a filter for almost 6 months. Until I decided to give a try for the last time.

Try pushing it several times and twist it until it dispenses water. It works!

I found that after replacing the filter and running some water the pump would stop and panel would no longer respond. I would wait about 10-20 mins then I could use the water again. It took 3-5 cycles to get the water going again reliably.

This happened to me too. The water dispenser and ice maker worked perfectly before I replaced the filter. I put the old one back and it still didn’t work. I checked the web and found advice on adjusting the water pressure and filling the new filter with water. (One of them said to do this for 20 minutes!) I knew water pressure wasn’t the issue because the old filter worked fine. I made sure the new filter was filled with water but that didn’t do the trick. The fact that reinserting the old one didn’t work was a clue that I didn’t follow right away.

Finally I remembered that when I removed the old filter by turning it to the left I felt a moderate amount of resistance and then it turned easily enough and came out. I figured that was just adhesion on a part that hadn’t been turned in more than a year.

Nope.

Keeping in mind that resistance that I had noticed when I removed the old filter I inserted the new one (filled with water) and after I felt the resistance I turned a bit more while being careful not to overdo it. It was like going over a small bump. Suddenly the filter turned a bit more and then seated itself. The water flowed!

It would have been nice of GE to mention this in their manual. Idiots.

Hope this helps some people who have this annoying problem.

We had real slow water and hollow ice cubes, replaced dual inlet valve, no change. Plastic hose on back of fridge sprang a leak… called for service as we were stumped, they offered that the water reservoir might be icing. Ok, so we got the hair dryer in there for a long while…no change in pressure. Husband ordered a water reservoir which came with a filter bypass plug ( we didn’t have with this fridge) water pressure was great! So, it must be the stupid everydrop filters (which are recommended). Happened to have a Denali brand filter for our model # so gave it a try- success…can’t imagine why other filters were so restrictive but it seems to be working now, good luck to you! This was a French door Maytag with water/ice in the door, love the thing otherwise.

I just ordered a “Water Inlet Valve” because changing the filter system did not fix the problem.

The only other reason I can see it not working is between the water inlet valve and the door tubing. But since the system was working perfectly before I changed a filter, I would bet the valve shorted out. I do not have a Ohm sensor to check it, so for $20 on Amazon, I just ordered a new one.

Assuming you have a GE, if the problem was immediately after installing the new filter then the problem has to do with the gadget the filter screws on to. Try putting your old filter back on to see if it works. There is a little ramp on the filter that is supposed to depress the little check valve to allow water to flow through. Most people are replacing the whole filter mount which would be the actual fix because there's nothing about it that's repairable. I was able to get mine going by turning the water off from the wall valve and loosing the water line to release the pressure between the water inlet valve and the filter mount assembly. The little check valve has a very small pintle thingy that hangs down from the filter assembly that got turned sideways when I installed the new filter and the only way to help it turn back the right direction was to get the water pressure off the back side of the check valve. Then I was able to get it to turn.

I fixed it! Thank you for all your thoughts and brainstorming! I placed the washer in my filter after going through all the steps above and once I did that Voila! I now have a stream of water in my dispenser. I also had foam above my filter which I removed, however that was not what worked. The washer did it and it was an easy fix for me. Thank you!!!

My Problem and solution was previously posted. I jiggled the + shaped flow valve that the water filter pushes in. Turn off and relieve water pressure before changing the water filter seems like a good idea.

This is my issue which I have not seen a solution or idea on how to fix. My water dispenser will dispense water for a few seconds then shut off, with a quick hammering noise. I replaced the filter and this did not fix it. I then traced out where the water source is coming from and it is split off of my kitchen faucet cold water line. My kitchen faucet works fine. I discovered when I have the kitchen faucet on, my refrigerator water dispenser works perfect. This leads me to believe it is not the water filtration assembly as water is coming through fine. Is it the water inlet valve? Why will the dispenser work fine only when the faucet is on and pulling water?

UNPLUG FRIDGE FOR 30 SECONDS. Out of the many repetitive answers above, I only found this once - by Bob Wasson.

Bob! You Da Man! I tried a lot of things - that didn't work. I KNEW it had to be something simple as the cause (me improperly turning out the Replace Filter light [I followed the filter manufacturer's instructions instead of those in the manual]) the cause was simple. And P.S. To The World - The unplugging thing also worked for my printer. Thanks, Bob. And you're welcome, world.

  • UPDATE STRAIGHT FROM A 30 YEAR GE REPAIR MAN ***** Don’t waste your time and money. If your refrigerator is in working order and the new, non-GE water filters don’t work properly, that’s because GE put in RFID tags and sensors in their newer appliances. So they purposely made it so only expensive GE filters work… and they do not disclose this info publicly so they get people frustrated enough for service calls. Super dishonest and shady business practice.

I finally solved my Kitchenaid KFRC704 refrigerator water filter dispensor issue. I would hve to reset the filter multiple times per day for the dispensor to work. Plus there was always a puddle of water at the filter door. It did not leak per se, just this small puddle. It seemed to be getting air into the system.

I ordered a Kenmore brand water filter 9082, it had smaller diameter O-Rings, so it was able to in further and that did the trick!. A tech had told me once that the filter needed to go in further when it was under warranty, now 5yrs later with the Kenmore brand filter, it works, no puddle, no having to reset the filter cartridge. The Every Drop filters has larger diameter O-Rings, which is a no-go.

I just had the same problem. On the suggestion of a local hero, I filed this hard plastic stem just a bit with a nail file. This allowed the filter to push all the way in and seat the valve stems properly. Go slow with the filing. Just a couple passes and then try it. Better too little than too much.
