Hi, OS 10.8 will not run on models older than 2087. Link provided the a Apple list of what computers it will run on. Good luck.

I’ve successfully upgrade to el capitan using clean install trick (provided you have another newer macbook to download the installer). Once download, copy the installer to a USB drive (make it bootable by using the official guide https://support.apple.com/en-my/HT201372) and install on your core 2 duo macbook. Best to upgrade your memory to 4GB and change hdd to SSD for optimal performance.

While Apple's TN imply this model won't run Lion or Mountain Lion there is in fact two versions of this model group the older Core Duo and the newer Core 2 Duo. Verify your model going to EveryMac - Lookup plugging in the last three digits of your system.

  • The Core Duo group can only run up to Snow Leopard:

This system can run the last version of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". However, it cannot boot in 64-bit mode nor does it support "OpenCL". The older Core Duo's CPU is not 64-bit clean which is why they can't run Lion or Mountain Lion

  • The Core 2 Duo models can in fact run Lion (10.7.x) sorry to say it can't run Mountain Lion.

This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM. However, although it has a 64-bit processor, it has a 32-bit EFI and is not capable of booting into 64-bit mode. It does not support "OpenCL" either.

So you can run a newer OS just not the latest depending on what you currently have.

Apple removed all of the 32-bit OS code in Mountain Lion which is why you can't run it.

Dan, why if my Macbook1.1 has an Intel Core Duo i386, x86_64 bit (according to system profiler) I cannot run Lion? what would happen if I try? thanks and cheers from Mexico City :)

Trust me it's not worth it ;-}

There are many reasons this is a bad idea. The installer knows what your system is and will fail to run.

Think of it this way.... Most cars can carry 5 or 6 people. Now lets add in 6 more people in. Even though the car can handle the weight its just not safe to do so.

MacPostFacto people are working on a hack to run at least Mavericks on 2006-2007 Macs.

So far they have it working on 2007 Mac Pros.

But iMacs and MacBooks will come later, if at all

Here's Apple's official line: MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) for Mountain Lion.

While people can cheat the installer and even run newer OS's there are limits here on what works from the systems firmware (32bit Vs 64bit) and the services the system offers (CPU & ports).

Think of it this way: Driving on the wrong side of the road can be done but it can be risky when you find the traffic is coming at you ;-}

Here is Apple's unofficial line: (for all products over two years old)

buy a new one(apple product)!

they stand behind that one.

and cripple everything else they can get away with

P.S. gota luv a late post
