Won't work at all

Hi. (1st time question). I have an Ipod Classic 5th Gen Video. The battery symbol at the top always showed it was plugged in and charging even though it wasn't. As well, my pc didn't recognize it and needed a long charge to fire up.

I replaced the battery and it fired up but still showed as plugged in and still not recognized on pc. Then all of a sudden and for no apparent reason it just died - nothing - won't show any signs of life. I checked the battery clip connection and still plugged in ok. Hoping you may be able to help as it has the only copy of all my songs.

Greg, this model has issues with the battery connector itself. Check to make sure that it is still securely fastened to the board. Clean your dock connector with some isopropyl alcohol and a few puffs of compressed air. Check for bend, broken, or corroded pins. Also make sure that you have a good cable to plug in your iPod. If all that is okay and since you already changed the battery, it looks like your logic board has failed. The very first thing I would do is to get a USB-to-Zif adapter, that will allow you to install the iPod's hard drive as an external drive. Copy your songs to a safe place on your computer. After that, replace the board. Hope this helps, good luck.

UPDATE

I just realized, after re-reading your question, that you have not replaced your battery. That should actually pretty much be done right after checking the dock connector.

Thank you very much for such a detailed and helpful reply. You've given me a few things to try. The one that sounds a possibility is the connector possibly breaking away from the board. If that's the case, is that something that can be fixed? Either way ill try all your suggestions. Thank you again for taking the time to help

Greg, you are welcome/ Sometimes the battery connector can be resoldered (depends on what the broken contacts on the logic board look like), and there are replacements out there. Biggest issue is that it is somewhat small and will require some decent soldering skills. Let us know what you find.
