Can only 1 RAM slot be used?

I'm wondering if I can upgrade the RAM in my MBP with a single stick of memory, or does it have to be in pairs? This is an i7, and somebody mentioned, but was not certain, that memory must be in both slots. If both slots must be used, then do they have to be the same size? Thanks.

Pairs are not required on these newer machines. You can mix them but lose a little bit of speed from interleaving.

RAM Type: PC3-10600 DDR3 Min. RAM Speed: 1333 MHz

Details: Supports 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM.

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 16 GB*

Details: 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules.

Mayer is correct.

What I suggest, a fast method, is go over to crucial.com, and drill down through the menus, their site will tell you exactly what type of ram, if they need to be installed in pairs, etc.

This is good for both PC and Mac systems, and a sure fire way to know exactly what your systems can or cannot run in regards to memory.

I went to this site but didn't have 30 minutes to go through their extensive menu to find a chart for selecting the correct RAM, got a link?
