I just finished the grueling upper case replacement and everything seems to be working except for the microphone. I double-checked the guide and it seems to make no mention of the microphone. I'm not sure if I never plugged it in, or if it's just not working. I get no response when I check the sound options in System Preferences.
Does anyone know of a way to verify it's a hardware issue before I take the whole thing apart again?

Hi zachrattner, there is one step involving the microphone, peeling it up from the adhesive securing it to the upper case (step 18). As LikeARabbit said, you'll be able to leave the microphone connected to the logic board and pull them out together, so you shouldn't have had to deal with it after that step.
To check the connection, you're going to have to pull the logic board back out of the upper case. See our microphone guide for where that connector's at.

Thanks, Andrew. I think the adhesive that holds the microphone to the upper case let me accidentally yank it out of its socket in the motherboard. When I finished putting everything back together, I found it sitting in the old upper case. So I had the pleasure of ripping everything apart not once, but twice.

If you have an external microphone (iPhone earbuds will work) you can plug it in and check system preferences to see if it's recognized as "external microphone" or something similar. This will at least let you know if the OS is recognizing audio input sources. If it recognizes the external microphone then I'd probably remove the logic board and reseat the microphone cable, which should be next to the speaker's connection on the logic board. Might also reset the PRAM and SMC before tearing it down again.
As far as the guide goes, whenever I've replaced a top case I'll typically leave the speaker and mic connected to the logic board. Once the board is out of the machine (which is kinda required to replace the speaker and mic) it's easier just to leave everything attached to it.
