Sorry but a 2012 MacBook Pro can actually run with 16GB and mine is living proof of that

No! The 2012 MacBook Pro ‘‘Retina’’ cannot upgrade the RAM to 16 GB after purchase,

You actually can’t upgrade the RAM at all. However in older unibody MacBook Pro's many people have doubled the claimed maximum amount. Simply because Apple says 8 GB is the maximum amount doesn’t make it true, I have 16 GB in my (Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro) and Apple says the maximum RAM is 8 GB so take what they say with a grain of salt.

The Life expectance of the Retina models are 2 years, Apple is selling out what used to be a company that was dedicated to the users is now only worried about profit and made many if not all of the past models upgradeable parts now non upgradeable in the newer models. (i.e MacBook Pro Retinas and MacBook Air's)

They have now started glueing the Retina models battery to the case with an abundant amount of glue and they are non replaceable with a life expectancy of 1K charge cycles.

Well, you ask what does that mean? It means the average persons MacBook Pro Retina will only last 2 years (and degrade by $4 every time you plug it in)

Apple needs to go back to how they were when the became who they once were.

Interesting to read the comments here. I am still chugging along (very nicely) with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012) in 2019! So much for the throw away Mac.

I was just going to say the same thing (same year/Retina, but a 15-inch.) It has worked perfectly until now, and it is in the shop for some work - feet on the bottom need replacing, one speaker is shot, and the trackpad only works with "tap to click." These are the only issues I've had since late 2012!

Me too! Late 2012 13" retina and working better than others.

Your milage may certainly vary. Using my MBP for desktop publishing and being on the run often, I usually recharge batteries twice per day, sometimes even 3 times. 2 years in batteries hadn't reached 1000 cycles, but they didn't last very long. 3 years and the batteries were totally dead, to a point I couldn't even use it as a desktop because of the degradation of the battery. The MBP Early 2011 I had before was exclusively used at a stationary computer, and the battery2 lasted until 2018. Still, it is not a very user friendly solution, nor sustainable, making a laptop with non-replaceable batteries.

i just came here to see if upgrading was possible, i bought my 2012 macbook pro retina 13 when the were first released (to many friends objections cus it didnt have an ethernet port), but it hasnt skipped a beat...literally.

I've used it as a touring and recording musician using Pro Tools and Cubase, as well as constant streaming of online media. Definitely doesnt need the upgrade but i thought id check it out to see if it wouldnt hurt.......im not bummed it cant cus its still kills all previous computers iv had

Well , i recently upgraded my late 2012 early 2013, disk to 500G (OWC kit) and have been running the machine since that time, without any problems. The Ram hower is not upgradeble but is sufficient for most programs. So take the 2 year warning with a grain of salt.

Was the overall performance of the mac better after the OWC upgrade?

完成的

I’m wondering the same thing. The OWC site claims 8-24% performance boost with their SSDs but I’m wondering if this is noticeable by users. Also, how is the overall quality and performance of the OWC? I’m looking at the 500gb for $95.

did not noticed any speed performance, but what is speed when you are relaxed computing ;) , but using the VMWare on this machine without noticable speedloss.

Simply, No. The MacBook Pro Retina Series has RAM that is soldered to the Motherboard. Just look at the iFixit Teardown and you will learn that simply, NO.

If it's a retina model late 2012 no you cannot upgrade or remove the ram it's soldered to the logic board. If it's a non retina late model 2012 yes you can upgrade it 2 16GB with an 8GB slot in each of the two ram slots.

Update (06/24/2019)

what's awesome about the SSD, is that it's so fast in most cases it can kind of make up for the lack of ram upgrade ability on the machines that aren't upgradable because programs still open so quick.

Also what you can do, is buy a sintech nvme adapter and an nvme style SSD which are three times or so faster than a standard Apple SSD. My stock SSD had a read and write speed average of about 1500 give or take. The nvme drive I swapped it out for has an average read-write speed of 3500 give or take.

To do this though, you need a little adapter from sintech which you can buy on Amazon for 12.99 but certain machines when this adapter is installed, can/will hang at shut down and sometimes have a weird sleep issue which there are a few fixes for by running a couple of commands in the terminal app but it doesn't really work on all machines either but on my 2013 and 2015 MacBook Pro retina has the adapter has works perfectly for both of them so I'm running a much much faster nvme style SSD which is amazing. My Mac boots up in 6 seconds literally. with the stock SSD it was more of about 12 or 13 seconds so the booting is twice as fast and the read and write of files is about 3 times faster depending on the nvme drive that you buy. So just a little tip for people that want to get even more speed. But just know that a few Macs don't like that adapter very well but there is also a newer version of that adapter which has supposedly fixed the shutdown Hang-Ups too. just make sure to check the comments or ask a question on the Amazon page for the adapter and make sure that the one you're buying is the updated version. only a few Max have issues with this adapter and it's usually the 2012 model and I think a few of the 2013 models. But they have adapters for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13in and 15in which all have upgradable SSD drives that can be converted over to use an nvme style SSD also. So you can make your Mac fly much faster yet even much faster than the stock Apple ssd which is already relatively fast, certainly faster than a regular spinner hard drive of course. basically the adapter converts the old pin style to a newer m. To nvme pin style so that almost any nvme SSD stick will fit in your Mac, but you do have to clone your Mac first. It is stated on the Amazon page that on certain machines you can't just boot up in recovery mode when putting in an nvme drive because there is no recovery mode on it yet and even using internet recovery won't work on some machines until you format the nvme SSD, so what I did was clone my machine to an external USB hard drive, installed the adapter and new nvme drive and then boot it off my external clone and used carbon copy cloner to clone back to the new drive and then boot it up and I was laughing out loud because it was so much noticeably faster even more so than the stock SSD which we all know is pretty fast already :-)

How do i check if mine is upgradeable or not though?

完成的

If it's a retina display you can't change or upgrade the RAM. You'll know by going under the Apple menu and selecting about this Mac and the window that pops up will say if it's a retina model or not.

Example “MacBook Pro Retina late 2012” If it doesn't say retina go into your display settings control panel and select the resolution as a double check, if there's a resolution up in the 2000x1400 or whatever (anything higher than 1200x800 or 1300x900 areas (I forget the actual numbers but they're much lower than 2000+) you have a retina model.

You can also just take the 10 screws off the bottom plate and see if the ram chips are visible and you'll be able to see immediately if they can be memoved as they'll have two chips stacked in regular ram slots. If you can't tell where the ram is it's soldered but just doing the “About this Mac" will tell you.

Glad I upgraded my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina build with 16gb RAM when purchasing through Apple. Figured more ram would be critical in 5+ years especially with the understanding the ram is soldered at time of purchase.

Yeah it stinks Apple has done this and also with their SSD drives in anything (laptops anyway) that is 2016 or newer I believe. Ugh…
