Spilled coffee on my 2008 version black MacBook. Came back to life in 12 hours. Worked fine for 6 more months. Crapped out suddenly. Mac told me price to fix would be $850. Bought a new MacPro instead for around $1,000, but would like to fix my old MacBook as a back up. Any ideas on how to do so for around $500?

Coffee is bad...first off, but apparently you did not have any sugar in it or spilled such a little amount that your computer still worked for so long after it... Here's what i do frequently when a customer has this issue...If you remove your macbooks top-case, and take a spray non-conductive electronics cleaner and lightly spray the logic board, then take a soft toothbrush and scrub the board, especially over spots where you see some spill residue, take out the ram and scrub it with the toothbrush too (Dont worry, you wont hurt it!) Let it dry for a few hours and then turn it on. If your lucky, you will have gotten it to work, if not... theres a good chance something else went wrong with your laptop, unrelated to the spill... bad ram slot, bad power button, etc...

Thanks...makes sense, but how do I remove the top case? I know how to get to the RAM, but no the logic board.

Heres what I would do. Sell your laptop to iFixit. Last year in September I sold my two year old laptop to them. It was a white macbook with many cracks and had some liquid damages. I got 600 for it.Then I went on Apples refurbished page and bought a unibody macbook for 994 so I only paid $394. :). Try doing this. Refurbished computers are exactly the same as new.
