not mounting HD using OS 9

Just got this, upgraded RAM to 640, purchased system 9 from "All Mac" in NoCal they said is specific to unit. Seller stated the HD was 250 GB. During install process w OS 9 disc, window says it can't find the HD, so I can't select it as a location to install the OS. A scroll-down tap tells me it can't "mount" the hard drive. IS it too big? A local Mac tech said the drive might be configured only for OS 10 and there could be a software fix (but he quoted about $120 for that). Is there some way to do this on my own? I'm fairly well acquainted with basic software troubleshooting, and well-versed with swapping hardware with instructions!

I'd like to use this for running Pagemaker, don't mind if I need to upgrade 10.4.11 to run classic, except that I'd rather not have to purchase the software. But that still may not be the issue. Should I get a smaller drive?

Seller is offering a return which will only cost me one-way shipping if the issue is with the unit, so I don't need to sink too much in it, but would be great to find a cost-effective solution.

many thanks in advance!

The computer should "see" the drive. Your computer will only format it to 128 GIGS with the current Mac ROMs. My concern is that it doesn't see it at all. I would pull the drive and see if it can be formatted on a newer Mac. I would partition it into two drives and put it back in. Format as Max OS extended. Stay with system 9 on this machine. It might take 10.2 but that's not a very good system and system 9 is great.

Thanks. Sounds like a good approach. I've never swapped drives on iBooks, though I've swapped and installed quite a few older PC desktop parts a while back. As this is an internal drive, what would be the best way to hook it up to an operating mac? I have a core2 duo desktop and a g4 PowerBook.

Resolved! The computer came with an OS 10.2 disk, so I was able to partition the 250 GB into 2x 125GB without installing 10.2, then installed OS 9 onto 1 partition. The OS 9 installation was able to see both partitions.

I do have one remaining issue. The screen view is condensed into half the size of the actual monitor screen, bordered by black. It actually did this before even installng anything. It starts up with a full white screen, then flashes a full screen desktop before compressing to half size. I looked into the control panel settings and couldn't adjust the monitor setting, it's set for 1000 somethingx 700 something. Any thoughts?

From what I can tell your computer is capable of booting into OS9 but I can't find where it will see large drives for OS9. The unit originally came with a 40G hard drive. If you keep that drive you will probably need to install a newer OS with a classic folder to allow you to run your software. Ralph

Ive read this G3 can use~120GB of a HD, some mentioning it can use part of a drive that is bigger than that, others saying that some bigger drives don't work at all. Allmac said they can use up to 100GB drives, but didn't say whether that's with OS 9 or X, or if they aren't compatible w larger ones or just use part of it.

You're saying this larger 250GB drive might be usable (at least in part) only with OS X?

Would this 900Mhz w 640MB ram will be bogged down w 10.4.11 and 9.2 classic? Better with just 9.2 instead?

If 10.4 w classic works with this hard drive, that's fine, or if I just swap the HD and run 9 that's ok, I just don't want to have to scramble to find or buy 10.4 then still have to replace the HD after!

I just tried it again.

Profiler reads "ATA 2, ID=0 Hard Drive--No volumes found." Selecting "Install MacIntosh Software," reads "a valid destination can't be found. To continue...mount a valid volume for software installation."

I would follow mayers suggestions about formatting the drive but if you plan on using the internet much I personally would want at least 10.3 and preferably 10.4 installed to have a really good browser available. Good luck Ralph

Ralph, did you see it was a G3 900 MHz? I'm worried about the RAM and being able to run 10.3 0r 10.4 with pageMaker on top of that. What's your thought?

Pagemaker is the wild card for me. I've never used it so I can't really say what that would do for memory usage. I have used the computers with 10.4 with no problem at max memory which 640 is. That of course assumes the OP is not using his pageMaker when surfing the web. As to doing both at the same time it may well be a OS like 10.3 or 4 would slow down his machine. Reading his answer I see he has several other computers so wouldn't really need to surf with this one. Ralph

For comparison, at the office I'm using an eMac 1.0Ghz G4 with 1GB ram running 10.4.11 with 9.2.2 classic for Pagemaker. There's a slight delay for certain operations with larger files but doesn't interfere with my flow, and yes, for online I use a newer unit. Maybe after I get my faster unit (1.67ghz g4) going at home with 10.4.11 and run classic I'll test it on the 900 G3, but for now I'll put it to task with native OS 9. Still have to look into the shrunk screen issue.
