An ill-conceived idea...

My power button would no longer turn my phone off. I need my phone for work, and I don't have a nearby Apple store (220 miles), so I ordered the parts and gave it a go.

My phone was still under warranty, but it's a pretty big hassle to send it in and get a replacement phone for a few days. I figured it would be easier to repair the phone myself. About halfway through dis assembling the phone, I started budgeting for a new phone. I figured there was no way I was getting it back together. Nevertheless, I pushed stubbornly on. The most worrisome part was removing the battery. I bent the battery slightly getting it out (I'm not sure how I could have done it differently - the glue is extremely sticky). Fortunately, I was able to bend it back, and on re-assembly, the phone worked fine.

One strategy helped me enormously. I got a piece of clean paper towel, and as the screws and pieces came out, I placed them in a separate location for each step, labeled. Come time to re-assemble, this saved my bacon.

One rather annoying thing was that I did not find the Phillips 00 to be a very good fit for the screws. It did not seem to sit well in the grooves, and I had to push fairly hard on the screwdriver to get it to rotate the screws.

The whole thing took me about 3 hours. I'm sure I could do it faster next time, but make no mistake about it - this repair is not for the faint of heart. I still feel I was lucky to get it back together.

Again, I had a lot of trouble getting the battery out. It was hard on my spudger, and bent the battery. I followed the advice as well as I could, but it still bent. More tips and specifics on how to do this would be great. I wonder if using a heat gun (hair dryer) would loosen up the glue. I have not tried this, and I wouldn't recommend you do either unless you have money to blow buying a new phone.
