Replace the display assembly for an iPhone 3G and fix a cracked or unresponsive front glass digitizer, a malfunctioning display, missing call audio, or an unresponsive home button.

My Iphone 3G had a completely shattered front screen, it was still usable but I wanted a nice clean screen again.
I ordered the Iphone 3G Display assembly, and the install took me like 6 minutes.. two screws out at the bottom of the phone, suction cup the old screen off, remove 3 ribbon cables and done. Putting the thing back together is definitely the hardest part, but only slightly.
Okay for the record the most challenging part of this install revolves around the iPhone 3G FPC Connector which is labeled cable #3 when you open the phone. The first 2 cables which you disconnected labled #1 and #2 just pop off and are easy to reinstall. the FPC connector (cable #3) requires that you gently lift a locking mechanism on the opposite side to where the cable inserts to unlock the ribbon cable before you pull it out or insert it for that matter. You can technically pull the cable out by force without unlocking but you'll never be able to reinsert it without breaking it. So just remember to unlock it first and its a piece of cake.

So, I had this old iPhone 3G back from 2007 that I gave to my mother, but a couple of years ago I happened to fall while skiing on the Alps and the display got damaged (it had an expanding stripe of broken pixels) by the shock and/or snow getting inside. Apart from that, the battery didn't last as long as new, so I finally decided to take it apart and give it a good fix!
Removing the display assembly was really easy, apart from the last cable (I missed the bit of the guide about having to open the plastic clip before removing the cable!). I also found that the right screwdriver to remove the screws was the Philips #000, at least for me (whereas in all guides they recommended a Philips #00). Replacing the battery was much more fiddly, but in the end I made it. If I should do that again, it would be much easier than the first time.
Be careful not to break the golden ground pin on the side when removing the motherboard.

I bought the replacement glass. I thought it was strange that the adhesive didn't come with it. Anyway, after replacing the glass, the digitizer didn't work. It appeared that the cables didn't come with the pads that keep them in place. So I was attempting to solve that when I apparently clobbered the LCD. Now the screen was blank white with a few streaks of red and blue. So, I ordered the display assembly with glass, LCD, and digitizer. Now the screen is black. When I tried the original parts, the screen is black also. I've purchased a used iPhone (from Ebay. Still waiting) to test the parts against.
For a quick fix that I've done a few time before, this one turned sour. But, my motto is "never say die". I will follow up when I get the used iPhone.

the repair went a bit bananas at the begining. I replace the part and one of the internal cables was not doing good contact so i could not use the slide functionality on the screen. I reopen the iphone and connect carefully the cables again. Then it works.
Iphone 3g works like new.
I can see that the screen is not the same type as the original one but it work so i will survive.

iPhone shared but, returned destroyed… It come back entirely striped and dug by shock. And fissured screen.
I entirely dismounted it and reassembled, without any problem.
The problem is solved, it acted as you said, it was a simple problem of connection.
had a shattered glass panel, tried to fix it with some cheap replacement piece of **** i bought from ebay resulting in corrupting the entire display. ordered the display assembly got it 2 (!) days later and replaced it - problem solved.

Battery life was fading after 2 1/2 years of service. And the other Iphone had a malfunctioning display (pixellines)
Replaced battery on one Iphone 3G and display assembly on another. All went flawlessly thanks to the great write up!
Ended up with one extra screw that fell out of one of the Iphones. There aren't any missing so I suppose this one rolled around somewhere in the enclosure...
For easy reassembly I printed out the layout with the location of the screws and placed every removed screw on the layout in the spot on the picture where it came out of the iphone.
