S4 - Not reading SIM card; therefore no phone
The S4 is fairly modular and with some guidance made this effort very easy. The diagnosis was the difficult part and first spent $4.00 for just the reader. The replacement motherboard had one on it. Replaced the motherboard in about 1/2 hour and unlocking from AT&T took about 1 hour (via email). So happy.
Don't be afraid. Go slow and research. If you need to start 'guessing' with replacement parts, go from cheapest and more expensive.

Sim card and micro SD ram card not found.
good, works great, an inexpensive cheap repair
back up your data (if possible) onto a google server before attempting replacement.
Otherwise you will lose all of your contacts and pictures/videos.
There is up to 16 g. of data embedded in the motherboard!!!!
The phone had taken a bath, actually going through a wash and rinse cycle in our clothes washer. After having it dried out I was told that the motherboard was bad and that I'd have to get a new phone. I found a MB on IFixIt and got it in a few days.
I had the phone apart and ready to go when the MB came in. It took about 10 minutes to assemble. I have really big fingers and the connectors are very small so patience was in order. Turned on the phone and it worked. What else can I say but "Thanks!"
