Initially, the HomePod would occasionally shut off during playback. I could temporarily fix this by unplugging it and plugging it back in after 10 seconds.
Hoping to resolve the underlying shutdown issue, I then performed a factory reset.
Now, the device is stuck in its factory state and shuts down every time immediately after the startup chime.

This is a tricky one! I don't think you can do much to fix this until you open it up to inspect the logic board looking for a blown component and/or testing voltages from the power supply and logic board.
I would start off reviewing the https://www.ifixit.com/News/71957/the-ho... and the YouTube video so you can see what's going on inside. It's likely the power management chip or its support components have a problem. Sadly, parts for this speaker unit are mostly custom excluding the speakers themselves.
