Stuck in head phone mode

My phone is stuck in head phone mode, even though no head phones are plugged in. I tried plugging head phones in and unplugging them, but it did not fix the issue.

I tried restarting the phone, to no avail. Then I tried cleaning the head phone port after posting the question. First with a dry swab, then with a minute amount of alcohol. Nothing changed. Went to get another head phone set to try again, and the phone mysteriously restarted under its own function (my fingers were not near or on the power button). After the phone came back on, head phone mode was off. Someone explain that...

Hi Thomas,

The headphone port has a switch built into it that tells the phone that a headphone plug is inserted. That switch is responsible for changing between headphone and speaker mode. It sounds like your switch got stuck, possibly just gummed up. I'm theorizing that the alcohol gradually dissolved the gunk that was keeping the switch stuck, allowing it to disengage and switch back to speaker mode.

That doesn't really explain the restart, but it's the best theory I can come up with.

If your theory is true, it appears (after some observation) the "stuck" part is a metal tab at the opening of the port. Manipulation of it released the phone from headset mode. I could stand to clean the device more often...

Anyway, thank you for your input. It definitely helped!

@thomasbarb43900 Indeed, it sounds like we do have a working theory. My calling it a switch is technically correct since it switches between modes, but you're right that it's nothing more than a little piece of metal that gets pushed up by the headphone plug and breaks or completes the electrical circuit.
