Dead pixel after logic board replacement

I recently completed two repairs on my MacBook pro:

  1. Replaced the logic board using this guide
  2. Replaced the factory SSD with a Crucial P3 Plus SSD 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 Internal SSD and a M.2 NVMe SSD convert adapter card

The MacBook operates fine but there is now 2 or sometimes 1 dead pixels in the center of the screen. I presume I've damaged something or done something wrong in the process of replacing the logic board but I just wanted some help on where to look. I removed the display data cable and reseated it but it still has the same issue.

On another note the upgrade to Monterey which is the final compatible version always fails. It just says "Upgrade failed" and boots into safe mode. When I restart it it goes back to Big Sur.

Any help would be appreciated!

Which version of the logic board did you install? A dual GPU or the iGPU only model?

As for the OS installer failing that can happen when the SSD has issues. Using an M.2 SSD with an adapter is not as stable as a direct pin compatible SSD. Do you have an external M.2 case which you can mount your current internal SSD into and then try re-installing. If that too fails using a fresh SSD in the case or a second external drive which can be reformatted and setup as a bootable drive try getting it working. Let us know how it goes.

@danj Its the Radeon M370X version so I think its dual GPU.

Thats interesting regarding the SSD, I managed to update it from High Sierra to Mojave, then Mojave to Catalina and finally to Big Sur so I thought the SSD was solid. As you say the adaptor could be problematic but I may have seen the issues on the other upgrades in that case.

@adamwilson43668 - The dead pixel issue gets into which graphics you have, the Intel iGPU (CPU module) uses the main memory for holding image before sending it off to the display, the AMD GPU systems use dedicated RAM, those 4 chips on the other side of the logic board of the GPU. To help in identifying the issue you’ll need to connect an external display to see if that bad pixel issue present on it when you are in mirror mode.

As for the OS upgrade, it’s a bit of Russia roulette! As the OS installer is also expanding the discrete pieces that make up the given OS build. So a given build can have elements which are larger than the older so they can struggle passing through the additional interface the adapter creates. Some M.2 SSD’s are more sensitive as well.

Also note, you don’t need to upgrade in order. I often just go to the higher version available for the given system. When going beyond what Apple limits you to, then it makes sense to go through the releases, I even go one step further, I make a backup before I do the next release as I’ve often had to backwind after applying Apple updates, otherwise you need to wipe the drive and do a full rebuild.

Thanks thats very informative. I connected it to an external display and the dead pixel is not mirrored there. It only shows on the MacBook screen.

I did try upgrading a few versions ahead but some error or another would land me in recovery mode even via bootable USB. The only way I could get to Big Sur was one update at a time! I read somewhere that the SSD firmware can need updating in each MacOS upgrade therefore you sometimes cannot jump ahead. Not sure how accurate that is but it did eventually work and get me to Big Sur.

@adamwilson43668 - The firmware issue was between Sierra and High Sierra as Apple updated the file system and changing the SSD driver, there were a few other updates addressing a bug in the new file system and the security protection issues Apple catches. At least that we know of.

Well… The internal display developed a problem then. Not much you can do to fix that.

@danj No worries, I'll just have to live with it then! Thanks for taking the time to explain it.
