MacBook Pro 17” 2009 wont turn on

Hello, i have a 2009 macbook pro that won’t turn on, even if the green light on the charger is on.

I thought that the problem was the 7771 capacitor (a very common issue ), so i replaced it with a new one but it doesn’t want to turn on.

I measured the voltage across the capacitor and i get 1.1V which seems good (?).

I even tried ti turn it on by shorting the power pins but as you may imagine nothing to do… (maybe i’m doing it wrong)

Can someone help me?

Let’s give this a try, disconnect the battery & charger, press and hold the power button for a good 15sec. Now plug in the charger did the system startup spontaneously? If it did let it compete the boot up and do a proper shutdown. Not plug in the battery, let it charge if needed and now try starting it again.

hello @danj, how is it going to power on if both the charger and the battery are disconnected?

完成的

@giulioforch2043 - Nothing! To do a hard SMC reset, then you plug in the charger only.

@danj i tried disconnecting both the battery and the MagSafe, the pressing the power button for 15 seconds, reconnecting battery and charger and then press again the power button.

Nothing happens, i also think that the battery indicator (the 8 leds on the side of the mac) connector is broken (will it cause any problems)

@giulioforch2043 - Try again, this time hold off in plugging the battery in! Again, disconnect power both Batt and Charger, press and hold power button 15 sec’s, then connect the Charger alone. The system hopefully spontaneously starts on its own.

sorry @danj ,i haven’t understand what i should do. Can you be a bit more clear? thanks!

@dan @jadonlyon

That’s the results of coconut battery, as aspected.

Are there any other tools to do diagnostic?

@danj they are both (battery charger chip and battery indicator leds) to the same power trail.

If the battery indicator causes a short the whole 3.42 line gets 0v so the charger chip won’t work.

Did i get it right?

Also is there a way to check if u7000 is working right?

There is one other tool, but again without the battery installed it won’t help you either.

So have you found a good battery?

@danj that screenshot was made with the battery installed, i also tried the old battery and got same result.

Do you known if there is a way to tell if the problem is the battery or the connector?

完成的

@giulioforch2043 - I’m confused! You got a fresh battery? This is showing me the batteries BMC microcontroller is bad or is unable to gain access to power to run. A fresh battery would supply the BMC its needed power at which point SMC would report values. As we can see the model info and age (which is in error) we know SMC is working! So we are still stuck with a bad battery.

@danj what BMC is? how does it work?

I don’t have a fresh battery, right now at home i have the 15 yo original battery and the “new” battery (it has been replaced in 2020 and the computer died in 2021 6 months later).

I tried booting the computer with both and the battery didn’t get recognised in both the cases

Are we sure so that the SMC is working? why is the age wrong? 185 months equals to 15,4 years, which is the actual age of the computer

完成的

@giulioforch2043 - BMC is Battery Management Controller the microcontroller within the battery. Look,at your snapshot do you see the information to the right of a callout like Mac Model that is info from SMC so clearly SMC is working. Let’s drop SMC as we are chasing out tails being over focused on it. As I have stated you need a known good charged battery to dig deeper. Otherwise it’s tracing out the power rails using schematics and board view drawings as well as a bench power supply to emulate the battery.
