iFixit incorrect replacement screen

I have replaced numerous screens and components on multiple devices.  The screen tested successfully but when I attempted to “snap” it back into place, it would not fit.  The video shows snapping in the four corners, but it would not snap back into place.

I compared the new and the old screen (New is Original, non-refurbished device purchased straight from T-Mobile).  The new screen from iFixit has tabs, and the original is smooth with no tabs on the glass/LCD.

Upon further inspection, the glass from iFixit has tabs in places where the phone does NOT have slots to receive a tab.

  • Specifically in the top right, there is a plastic post that does not have a corresponding hole, and a metal tab that does not fit or snap in the phone.
  • On the left upper side there is a  tab that is twice as big as the slot in the phone
  • On the lower left two of the four tabs in the corner do not have corresponding slots.

This glass will NOT fit into the phone.

iFixit only shows a single product available for the Pixel 7 Pro screen, how could the snap tabs be so different?

Hi Steve,

You've run into a problem we mostly see on iPhones, but I've run across it a couple of times on Pixels as well.

What's happened is when you removed the original screen, you got between the screen's mounting frame and the OLED rather than between the screen frame and the phone frame. So you've separated the screen from the mounting frame that's supposed to stay on the screen and left it on the phone.

What you need to do at this point is go back around the phone and do the screen removal procedure again, only on the screen frame this time.

Compare your new screen with the original, and you'll see that the difference is in that mounting frame. Now if you look on the phone you'll find the frame still there; that's what you have to remove from the phone so you can replace it with the new screen.

By the way, iFixit sells genuine Google parts for the Pixels, so there is no question that you have the correct part; it's not some schlocky aftermarket part.

Nevermind... I received a response from support and feel extremly silly. It seems that the old frame from the glass came off and was still attached to the phone. I took it as part of the phone casing not realizing that it was part of the glass.

Exactly as Jerry mentioned here. I'm marking his response as the answer.

I was able to pop it out and the new screen fit as intended. Please ignore me, and hopefully someone else can learn from my error.

Awesome, Steve, glad to hear it all worked out! Congratulations on a successful repair, and yes, you're absolutely right that your experience may well help the next guy who comes along with a frame that's come off the screen so kudos for contributing to the iFixit community!

You’ll need to talk with the store folks as you may have gotten the wrong part.
