Blue Home Light won't turn off after soda damage

Got a soda spilled onto my Nintendo Switch Pro controller and all the buttons started pressing at the same time.

After a while of it drying and me waiting for the battery to die, it turns back on and the buttons seem okay with limited testing, but the light is still stuck on.

I've taken the controller apart and put it back together without enough information on what might be causing it to know if anything looked wrong on the inside

Hi @tacticalchaoz

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the controller's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your controller and then remove the battery as soon as possible to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the device and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a links that describes what happens. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this, it might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit Nintendo Switch Pro Controller repair guide, that may help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your controller to a reputable, professional electronics repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

I've taken it apart again and wiped it with 91% isopropyl alcohol, the buttons mostly worked but the left trigger (ZL) seemed to be stuck down even though I could freely press it and release it.

I took it apart again, detached additional pieces, pulled the triggers off and cleaned them, then put it back together. This time seemed more successful, as the blue light stayed off and all of the buttons worked as expected. But about 2 minutes later, while playing Tears of the Kingdom, the pause menu would randomly come up (+) and the shield would constantly be out (ZL) and then it seemed like all the buttons would press for a second before going back to just ZL being pressed, even though the physical button wasn't stuck down.

Seems like I might need to replace the button board, does that sound accurate?

@tacticalchaoz

Seems like it, although it may be worthwhile cleaning the ZL again just to make sure. Strong light and magnifying glass usually help to check if things are really clean or not ;-)
