Filthy Display Screen 'Glass" Replace or Replace all?

I have this 2012 13" A1365 MB Air, the screen 'glass' is in quite a bad way with a bunch of scratches and what appears to be some sort of residue on it. I have tried using alcohol and even gasoline to soften it up, I managed to remove the most but it still looks bad. The unit and display in every sense are working fine. Question is, do I have to replace the whole LCD or is there a way to just 'swap over' the front 'glass' (For lack of a better name) as I do have an old LCD lurking around somewhere....

The display have some antiglare coatings which tend to break down on this series.

You have the right idea just removing them but I wouldn’t have used gasoline! Instead get a bottle of mouthwash, Yup! Mouthwash! I’ve found Listorine works well, some might not work as well.

A cotton pad which is just damp as you need and some elbow grease. Don’t press to hard as you can damage it and don’t let the liquid seep under.

@danj Yes good point! Mouthwash haha! I have tried the Liserine but it didn't shift the gunk! This air was more dirty than Beijing believe me, it's now looking as good as new except the screen Fingers crossed 🤞

For the record I actually used Kerosene the same was as we would use the Listerine.

@danj I tried also laying a flat razor on the screen to see if it picked up any of this substance, and noticed that it took a little slice of what looked like to he the outer transparent plasticy surface material, which brings the question, can this whole outer layer be removed or peeled off and replaced by either the same from a matching failed LCD or similar?

@livfe - The coating is vapor deposited in a vacuum chamber. It’s softer than the glass which is why a sharp blade can scrape it. If that works for you go over the entire display, frankly I find it less work to leverage the chemical approach. One of the ingredients within Mouthwash can do it more effectively.

There are antiglare coatings which can be applied as a film sheet, I never had great success with them.

@danj I will give it another go with the mouthwash let it soak for some minutes then try the elbow grease method, I am just not comfortable to rub it off to hard incase I wrecked something inside. So there is an antiglare sheet that can be taken off a wasted screen and another put in its place somehow in case the blade scratched the screen as a last resort?
