There appears to be no HDD/SDD drive, how do I add one?

I recently bought the OWC kit to replace the HDD drive in my iMac as it would no longer boot up. I decided to upgrade it to a 512 SDD drive instead.

As I was following the instructions, and removed the screen I realised that there was no HDD drive in the cradle, no cables - nothing!

My question is can I still add the ssd drive I bought and if so how?

Thanks!

Right @fixer85785 & @danj, first of all a massive thank you for your help and quick responses!

The TL:DR is I got it working!

  1. First I ordered the SATA cable and the Rubber Bumper for the SSD as they weren't found in the iMac itself:

  1. Then I followed the instructions to replace the HDD with SDD drive, but went one step further and actually removed the cradle for the HDD so I could fit my new SATA cable beneath it.

# Then I connected the SATA cable to the motherboard; the connections were found underneath (see photo)

  1. Then I closed up the back and formatted the disk as per normal and it works fine!

Hi @josh76101!

I looked up your model of iMac here, which, according to this, is the same as EMC 2833. Looking up that, I discovered that Apple sold several models of this computer, including one that only had a blade SSD installed and no HDD. Follow this guide to find it. If you find that you have that model, you can just slot your new SATA SSD in the cradle you attached a picture of and all should be well. Since you probably already have an SSD with an OS installed, there's a good chance you won't need to reinstall macOS. However, if you do have the factory SSD model (as opposed to a factory-installed HDD one), I would be very surprised if it was actually faulty, leading me to believe that your non-booting computer may have another problem. If you provide us with more info, we'll be able to help you fix it.

Let us know how it goes!

Amazing,

Thanks for this, I have ordered the rubber bumpers and a cable so I can fit the new SSD in, but the question I have is where does my cable connect to?

This is the one I bought:

But I dont see where to attach it to the board?

Thanks for your help!

There's probably a plug in the caddy. I attached the picture you included to my original answer and marked it where the plug *should* be. If it's not there, let me know, and we'll figure it out.

@josh76101 - Hold that thought! What is the system year as the last models has soldered storage on the logic bd.

You’ll need a SATA/Power cable and you will need to lift the logic board up th reach behind to plug the cable ends. The SATA/Power header is present, it’s the blade socket and interface parts on the SATA only systems which won’t be present.

Amazing thanks @907fixer and @Dan, parts hopefully arriving today so I'll keep you posted with how it goes! 🙏🏾
