How long does a refrigerator need to run after compressor replacement?

We have an LG refrigerator. LG service offered a guarantee repair. So they sent the first repairman, who diagnosed it as a bad compressor. He replaced it. Told us that it needs to run for at least 48 hours before it cools. It never cooled. Stayed above 80 degrees. We called LG and really pushed to have another tech come out. He came out and said that it was a bad evaporator. Replaced that. Told us that it'd be working by the evening (~ 5 hours or so). It cooled to 72 degrees but stays at that temperature. A day later, I call them, and they are telling me that it needs to run for 24-48 hours. Does that sound right?

Hi @mikec27221

Did either technician measure the high and suction pressures in the sealed system, to ensure that there was the correct amount of refrigerant in the system after the compressor was replaced?

Usually when a compressor is replaced, the existing refrigerant needs to be evacuated from the system before the compressor is removed, then the compressor can be replaced. After which any air in the system is pumped out and a vacuum created in the system to ensure that there's no air left in the system and then the correct amount of refrigerant is pumped back in again.

Once this is done then the compressor is turned on and the pressures are tested to make sure that all is OK i.e. if incorrect then refrigerant is either added or removed until they are correct and the system is sealed.

If the pressures are OK then it could take from12- 24 hours before the refrigerator and freezer compartments are at their correct operating temps. This depends on how warm they got when the compressor wasn't working i.e. ambient temp where the refrigerator is located.

Thanks @jayeff. I am not sure of the specifics of what the tech did. I was not home and I regret not being home for it. During that 12-24 hours, would the temp be gradually cooling or you wouldn't expect the temp to budge? It was above 80 after the compressor was replaced. They told us to wait at least 48 hours. Then it went down to 72 after the evaporator was replaced. It is stuck at 72. But it is the same - we're told to wait 48 hours.

The temps should slowly continue to drop until the correct operating temps are achieved, provided that the doors aren't being opened too often and also that there's no food stored as these absorb the cool as well. Better to run empty until the correct temp as it will be quicker.

The time it takes depends on how warm the interior walls of the compartments got because they absorb most of the cooling created by the refrigerant passing through the evaporator unit and being blown throughout by the evaporator fan.

Once they get cool/cold then the air inside the compartments will be cool/colder and this is what the temp sensors signal the control board to regulate whether the compressor and evap fan need to be turned on again to drive the temps back down or to turn them off as it is cool/cold enough.

Basically once the correct temps are achieved the compressor and fan are cycled on and off to maintain the temps within a preset operating temp range. The min and max point are usually in the vicinity of 0°F to 5°F for freezer and 36°F to 39°F for refrigerator.

Can you hear the evaporator fan operating?

It will run as long as the compressor is running and should stop when a door (either door) is opened as you don't want to blow the cold air out. The compressor will keep running though. The fan will start again when the door(s) are shut.

Don't confuse this fan with the condenser fan which can run regardless of the doors being open or shut as it is used to cool the compressor and not the compartments.

Thanks again @jayeff. What you're saying makes sense but I wanted to confirm that before calling them out on it. I don't want to wait 24-48 hours and then start from scratch again. I would expect that the temp would keep dropping, even if it isn't "cold". But it hasn't budged below 72 degrees.

Somethings definitely wrong either with the compressor or the sealed system.

Worst case is if there's a leak in th e system and all the refrigerant has escaped.

Perhaps check if the compressor is hot to the touch

BE CAREFUL - don't burn your hand in case it is.

It will be warm but not hot,

If it is hot then it may be a leak and they will have to pump dye through the system to find out where it is and fix it if possible as it may be in the piping where it can't be accessed, so the refrigerator will be a write off as it can't be fixed.

But first things first.

The high and suction pressures would need to be checked to know what's happening
