Problems connecting the MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 to a monitor

Hello,

I must say that I am not a Mac expert,

My problem, which seems absurd to me, is to connect a simple monitor to the MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 via the Thunderbolt 1 port, I know it may seem trivial but I’m going crazy.

After doing some research I tried these cables that were said to be suitable for the purpose:

-Amazon Basics - Cavo da Mini DisplayPort a HDMI, con connettori rivestiti in oro, supporta audio digitale nitido e risoluzione Full HD, 1.83 m, Nero : Amazon.it: Informatica

-FOINNEX Cavo Mini DisplayPort a HDMI, 4K 60Hz Attivo Cable Thunderbolt 2 a HDMI Adattatore, Cavi Mini DP a HDMI UHD Mini Display Port to HDMI Compatibile con MacBook Air/Pro, Surface Pro, Laptop, 1M : Amazon.it: Elettronica

and finally I also tried an adapter like this, (suggested by GPT chat, I know but I was desperate):

-Rankie Adattatore Mini DisplayPort Mini DP (Thunderbolt Compatibile) su HDMI, 4K, Nero : Amazon.it: Informatica

but nothing works, the monitor ports are an Acer Nitro VG271UM3 has 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and a Display Port 1.2, and they all work.

Now I still haven’t understood if the Thunderbolt 1 port also works with the mini-DP cables since I read that it is based on the same technology (forgive the term), others say that those of the min-dp are not compatible, I’m not understanding anything anymore.

But I wonder how did you connect a monitor to the MacBook Pro in 2011?

Another thing I thought is that if the cables are right it’s the Thunderbolt port that’s broken, is there a way to check it?

Thanks for any answers

I found that these 'small box' mini display port connectors are a bit hit and miss, I didn't yet have problems using an after market one like this pictured below, but not necessarily by the same brand. Cheap and cheerful!

Thank you for the response, I bought this

but it doesn’t work, and I believe they are of the same type, moreover in the description it says “compatible with thunderbolt” but it doesn’t work.

I believe there is a difference between the Thunderbolt 1 port and the Mini DisplayPort, the Apple website says this

, but many products indicate this as compatibility:

And I’m going crazy trying to find the right one but I don’t understand

I use the white one with the bigger box on 2012 Pros, 2013-17 Airs and they always worked for me. It also works fine on a 2009 MB Pro I have here with an internal display issue.... the ones you showed have a smaller or thinner box, these I had no luck with....

@giacomo62463 BTW, did you check the setting in dock & menu bar for screen mirroring?

@livfe Okay, I tried this

as you suggested it has a bigger box but it doesn’t work.

I also took this DP/mini-DP cable (compatible with thunderbolt 1/2 according to the product description)

https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0CC4YW3R2?ref=...

but it doesn’t work, the monitor is black.

I noticed that when I connect the HDMI cable to the adapter or the simple miniDP/HDMI cable, the MBP screen turns black for a second and then turns back on (as happens when you connect a screen to a PC) but the other monitor is always black.

I noticed another thing that after a while of trying to attach and detach, in the system preferences/Monitor it changes the resolution option by itself that is inserted by default, and it checks resize, and it lets me choose the resolution I want, I tried them all from 1024x640 to the maximum 1440x900 but always the same story, I tried to change the resolution to 1024x640 and to turn off and restart, but nothing works.

I don’t know what you mean by settings in the dock and in the menu bar for screen mirroring, in the preferences only the MB monitor appears it doesn’t detect anything else, if I try to search in the spotlight and write mirroring then I go to monitor it says “the Arrangement panel of the Monitor preferences is hidden because only one monitor is connected to this computer” and I don’t know if it means the integrated monitor of the MB or the connected acer monitor (which would be a step forward). my monitor is an acer VG270U with max resolution 2560x1440 at 144hz, maybe this is the problem?

Sorry, I hope I explained myself.

So, I managed to update the operating system that was previously “OS X Yosemite 10.10.5” and now I have managed to install macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, (it wasn’t easy because it wouldn’t let me install it from the app store telling me that the “copy of the macOS High Sierra application is damaged and cannot be used to install macOS”. In the end, I found on a forum someone who was able to solve the problem by changing the date, and in fact, I changed the date of the Mac to 06/28/2018 and it updated…crazy things), hoping that this could solve the problem but nothing, it doesn’t work.

livfe I don’t have screen mirroring in the settings, I only have Display.

The conclusions I have come to (always being ignorant of Mac as I am) could be:

1-I’m wrong to buy cables and/or adapters

2-the thunderbolt 1 port is broken

3-my monitor is too much for the Mac.

The solutions I can undertake?

1-wrong cables/adapters, I don’t have a solution because I’ve tried 5 if you have a specific brand let me know and I’ll try that.

2-broken thunderbolt port, I don’t have a solution because I wouldn’t know how to check that the port works.

3-the screen, I will try with an older screen from a few years ago, which has an HDMI 60hz port with a max resolution I think fullHD and see if it works

I don’t know what else to do and it seems surreal to me.

Also, another problem I have a Logitech mx master 2s mouse and the MBP’s Bluetooth doesn’t detect it.

ahaha LIFE. -.-'

@giacomo62463 I always have problems with mac and Bluetooth especially with mobile phones, and when WiFi is on at the same time... The HDMI adaptors are no brand...I dunno what to suggest, difficult unless hands are on it.... Screen mirroring is in the display settings somewhere, must be... https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/mirro... connect up and maybe it appears? Or treat yourself to a 2.5ghz 2012 or 2.5 or 2.8ghz dual graphic 2015 15" Quad core, they are really the best apple ever made. HDMI direct output... I got 3 of these lil' beasts.
