(Almost completely) Dead MacBook. Can it be saved?

I believe it is a MacBook Air 13 inch 2017 based on the serial number.

It is practically completely dead however, if I connect usb devices, they get power when the laptop is turned on and the fan spins when turned on as well but other than that, nothing.

I opened it and saw something weird, it looks almost burned but I don’t know what component it even is.

Can someone please explain what’s under this metal plate and what its function is. If there’s a picture of what it looks like underneath I would really appreciate if someone would send it.

Is it possible for it to be restored?

Thank you for any help and advice!

Well the discolored shield covers the Thunderbolt controller chip. So is this discolored by a spill or the chip failing?

Do you have micro-soldering skills? You might want to pop off the shield to see if all that’s needed is cleaning up the spill if that was the issue or even to see how bad the damage is under it.

You likely will find replacing the logic board as the best way to go if you want to keep it running.

Is that controller essential for it to boot up?

It’s not that simple, the system has a second computer which deals with the health and monitoring of the systems logic (SMC) when it sees critical component failures which it monitors then the system can refuse to work, in addition the failure it’s self could create issues.

Personally I haven’t seen this try of issue so I can’t tell you which possibility is the likelihood.
