MacBook Pro M1 stopped working all of a sudden

Dear All,

Good Day and thanks for taking time to read this post.

I was using my Macbook Pro M1 (running Sonoma 14.3) and doing video editing via Adobe premier pro. This isn't the first time I am doing this and have been editing many videos and had it peak to its top performance.

All of a sudden, the display and touch bar went black and there was no response. The fan was running at its peak speed. I tried force shutting down the mac and the fan stopped running after this. However if I turned it on, the fan started running and there was no response from the macbook, no display turning on, no sound, nothing literally. I tried it many number of times but no progress.

After sometime even the fan stopped running and the mac was looking absolutely dead :(

I left it as it is and after around 10-15 mins, it started turning on automatically. Then after it started working properly and when I ran the diagnostic, it did not throw up any errors.

Please suggest if this could be due to any software issue or CPU/GPU performance issue or could it be any hardware damage that would have caused this temporary death.

Your expertise and advise will be of great great help to me.

Thank You All.

Hey, @avinashkuma7764

Sounds like a CPU failure to me. CPU fans in newer Macbooks are completely ineffective, and this leads to overheating after long periods of time. It sounds to me like the CPU went into emergency shutdown mode to try to save itself from being fried by the intense heat released by the electrical components inside your device. It may have been a failure of the fan temporarily, a period where the fan wasn't running fast enough (Sometimes caused by a glitch that doesn't allocate enough power to the fan. This is supposed to be a glitch but I'd bet Apple did it on purpose), or possibly your Mac was being used for too long at the time, for too strenuous of a task. My suggestion would be to open the device and inspect the CPU, to make sure it's in proper condition, without any markings or burns on the surface. Next, I would clean the fan using either a toothbrush or air can to ensure that it is in the best possible condition, and hope for the best. If this happens again, I would suggest replacing the CPU fan, to prevent damage to the CPU

Russell - Just because it doesn’t act like a Intel based system doesn’t mean the fans are the issue. The issue I mostly see in this series is systems with only having 8GB of RAM and limited free storage so the system locks up. Freeing storage as well as reducing the amount of active apps using RAM often fixes this.

@danj I understand your position and what you're saying here, but software capabilities aren't always the issue. The model in question is a late 2020 MacPro, so it wouldn't be ordinary for it to have a memory overload, especially because the author of the post said he was editing video footage, and it had once been at peak performance at some other point in time.

@indianarepairs - Ah! So must be heat then! Sorry nope😓

The killer is the limits of storage! As you know rendering vids consumes RAM and storage. So if you run out of RAM your OS pushes to Virtual RAM, but if you don’t have free storage the system gets stuck! I service Pro’s and Students mostly and have seen this a few times.

Even still getting firm diagnostic data can help us here! That’s the reason to get TG Pro installed so if this was a thermal issue it would show it’s self here.

@danj An overheated CPU makes plenty more sense than a 3.5 year old MacPro not having enough memory to run editing software.

@indianarepairs - This is a M series based SoC system not an Intel CPU based system. Very different architecture. Runs much cooler that Intel based systems.

Let’s get some better diagnostics here! Install this great app TG Pro it will allow you to monitor your temps and your fans.

You may also want run Activity Monitor to see what’s happening with your systems RAM and storage as Adobe Premier Pro can push the system to hard if you don’t have enough RAM and free storage causing the system to lock up.
