Display "falls back after 100°" is there a fix?

I have a 2017 MB Air A1466 and when the display is opened to around 100° it flops back to its maximum extension, I have checked the hinges and they are not lose at all (I tightened them right up), it must be something with the hinges? Problem is to change them I can only find the left side with the cable and no right hinge replacements. Is there some trick to make them more stiff or am I looking at a whole new top case unit?

This is a known issue in this series as the hinges have a spring friction that wraps around the hinge pin. But the hinge pin is press fitted into the aluminum lid frame with a key surface which can often break free.

Sadly, you need a new frame which if you can find a junker you could swap out (not easy mind you) or the only other option is to get a new display assembly.

Yes I thought as much, not the nicest or easiest job to do... here's looking for a junker! Would one new hinge fix it? Or do you know if a 2015 & 2017 share the same screens and connections?

Maybe changing just one hinge might make it 'better (The one that includes the cable is easy to buy, the right side without hinge nobody sells as far as I can see)

@livfe - Sadly it’s not that simple, give this vid a look MacBook Air Hinge Service. Both hinges have cables running thru.

A time consuming fix yes, I did it before to change an LCD inside the assembly :)
