Repair and Disassembly guide for the 2020 ASUS G15 G512LI, A laptop produced by Asus for budget/light gaming.

Screen does not turn on and battery light blinking white

Majority of the time, my laptop should be plugged into charge when powering it on or the screen is just black and sometimes even when its plugged in, the screen still remains black. I must connect the charger and then do a hard reset by holding the power button for 30 seconds and then it works. After the hard reset is done, if I unplug the charger, the laptop will work properly. (Not compulsory to be plugged into charge the whole day)

When my screen is black and sometimes even after the hard reset and the laptop starts working, the battery charging light is blinking in white. (Plugged in or on battery)3 blinks, a 4 second pause and then again 3 white blinks and that keeps looping

Another thing is that this problem with the screen not switching on is a one in a while thing. Not everyday and not every week

For example:

I shut down my laptop just now while on battery and let it sit for 5 minutes, plugged it into charge (Orange battery charging light - No issues) and then powered on the laptop and the screen shows up. No issues at all & everything is functioning the way it should

Laptop spec: ASUS ROG Strix G15, i7-10750H, GTX 1660Ti, 1TB Nvme PCIe M.2 SSD, 16GB RAM, Windows 10 Home

I'm pretty concerned about this issue as it doesn't look right and I'd really appreciate any feedback I can receive on this matter.

Hi @athifhassani

When the laptop is working create a battery report to check the condition of the battery.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value against the Full Charge Capacity value. For a good battery they should be nearly the same value.

You can check the condition as a percentage by using the formula Full Charge capacity value x 100 ÷ Design Capacity value. If the battery is <35% you may wish to consider replacing it.

I'm suggesting that you try this because what you're doing to get the laptop to turn on etc is you're resetting the BIOS back to its factory default condition.

This procedure is usually only done when the BIOS has become corrupted for whatever reason.

In the past, when laptops were turned off there was a separate non rechargeable coin cell battery on the motherboard that was used to maintain the BIOS settings but that function has now been replaced by a battery supply taken from the main laptop battery.

Hi,

Thank for your response.

So I checked the battery report and did the calculation to get 76.3%

The battery health seems to be decent. If so, then what else might be causing this problem?

Just so you know, I do have a BIOS update available right now. Should I update that? The current version (G512LU.308) is from the factory and the available update is 311. If I'm updating the BIOS, should I backup windows or my data incase of any issue or crash?

It's always advisable to have a recent full backup and also create a "system restore point" as well, more so before performing a BIOS update.

Does the BIOS update state what it is for? Sometimes there's a specific reason given and not just the usual "to improve system performance" which doesn't tell you much.

Try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery drivers in Device Manager → Battery (right click on the entry and select uninstall) and then restart the laptop and they should re-install on startup (if it starts), just in case their settings are corrupted etc

It's still odd that a power refresh gets it working again until the next time

On ASUS's website it says the version 311 is for Improve System Stability.

I've already tried that on device manager a few days ago but the issue still persists.

Alright I'll backup data & create a system restore point.

One question: Is it important to update the BIOS? I've been on factory version all these years and it didn't have any issues. So is it actually beneficial to update the BIOS in this case or are we doing it just for be benefit of the doubt?

That's true as this one is pretty odd. Researching it online, I seem to be having a mix of multiple things such as the screen not showing up till I hard reset it, blinking battery light, the problem isn't there all the time. Upon hard reset (if it works), from then on the machine works with no issue no matter how many times I restart or shutdown afterwards.

To me BIOS updates are always "iffy". Leave well enough alone if you're not having any problems unless perhaps the BIOS update is described as "critical"

I've only ever done one once, on all the PCs I've owned and that was as a last resort as nothing else worked so nothing to lose and fortunately it worked - not the same problem as you're having though (Not that I've had many PCs but there have been a few in the last 35 years)

I see. Thanks for the update.

So aside from the battery health & BIOS, what else do you think I could try? Or what this issue might be related to?
