Why is my ps4 slim overheating even though the body temperature is low

Basically my ps4 slim fan stopped working for a while so I removed it recently. before I removed it, although the fan was bad an didn't spin I could play games by placing a standing fan on top the open cover of the ps4 . Currently with the bad internal fan the ps4 removed it overheats(even though the standing fan is on it). Mind you the ps4 body temperature is low. It just doesn't want me to play any game. Could it be the thermal paste or I need to connect an internal fan for it to work. It let me enter the game menus but the second I want to play a game it show the overheating error and switches off. I have deep cleaned it and changed the thermal paste. Idk what else to do. Could it be the ps4 has a system in place that stops the ps4 from working when the internal fan isn't connected?

Hi @ahmedalame68758

Looking at the ifixit PlayStation 4 Slim 风扇更换 guide, the fan has a 3 wire cable connection i.e. Batt, Gnd and a 3rd wire which most probably is a temp sensor.

If the fan is removed the system doesn't know if the fan is working or not.

Therefore it goes into a protect mode, i.e. it is shutting down to protect the CPU from any damage that may possibly occur due to overheating due to no fan being detected.

Hey there again, Sorry if I'm disturbing you. Is there a way I could trick the ps4 into thinking the fan Is connected

You said that before even though the fan didn't spin, the PS4 still worked if you had an external fan blowing air over the open cover. Maybe that's the way to do it i.e. leave the fan connected and use the external fan.

Not sure if the system checks the fan sensor lead with reference to battery or ground so if for example the PS4 fan was trying to operate and was too noisy etc you could maybe disconnect the fan's red wire from the fan cable plug and check if the PS4 still stayed on and if not then reconnect the red wire and disconnect the black wire from the fan cable plug. Might be easier to simply cut the wire at a suitable point so that you can splice it back together if the wrong wire was cut.

Fan doesn't work anyway so cutting the wire(s) shouldn't matter.

Of course you would have to still use the external fan.

Thank you so much for answering me. So I took it to a repair shop. He tested two fans and non of them works. Apparent it's not the fan that was damaged. I don't trust those guys so much so I'm hoping they don't use my ps4 as parts. Do u think it might be the fan connector on the motherboard that is the problem ? Because the first time I removed the fan there was some corrosion on the connector. Would soldering another connector help. Once again thank you.

If you have a DMM (digital multimeter) you can use it to test if there's power being sup[plied to the fan at the connector or not

If not then you'll need the schematics for the motherboard to find out why not. I can't find the schematics online
