No light on MagSafe - But system works for 15 minutes

I have 11” MacBook Air early 2015. The battery was giving a warning before I went away for two weeks leaving it in my car boot. On my return, the laptop would not turn on. No light at all on the MagSafe charger.

I opened up the back and removed the battery to see if that was the problem. Now, when I attach the charger with no battery in the laptop, it boots up and works fine for about 15 minutes and then closes down. Still no light on the magsafe. Any ideas??

The MagSafe charger has its limits trying to run your system, so while it should be powerful enough to boot up and run a limited process app it’s not able to support the most demanding apps like gaming

Even still the fact the MagSafe chargers LED is not lighting is not a good sign. I would start off inspecting the connector for dirt build up and the contacts are clean. The middle pin is the comm link between the charger and the systems SMC logic. If cleaning doesn't get you going, it’s time to replace the MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2013-Early 2015) I/O Board which offers the MagSafe connection, here’s the guide to replace it MacBook Air 11" Early 2015 I/O Board Replacement I would also try a second charger to make sure it’s not bad.

Given the age of the system you may need a fresh battery as well. After you get the system going I would check the battery using this App CoconutBattery

Thank you. I first tried cleaning but no luck. Also tried two different chargers, but as they both reboot the mac, i have to assume they are not the problem. And as they will only work when the battery is taken out, i thought the battery was the obvious culprit ... But can't understand why the rebooted mac will only go for 15 minutes with charger attached and no battery ... Is that likely connected to the SMC? (I have ordered a replacement battery, but was holding out on a new I/O board.

@claireo - SMC needs to communicate with the battery and the charger. The lack of connection with both will cause odd issues like you have, which is why you likely need a new I/O board as the MagSafe connection is within it.

Once you get the battery don’t turn it on, just plug in the MagSafe charger the LED needs to glow either Amber or Green, if not you’ll need a new I/O board to isolate this down.
