Charger, battery and overheating.

So I've got this old Asus ROG here, now I know that the battery needs to be replaced, as well, it was made in 2011!

When I plug it in, I gotta hold the charger at a certain angle, the angle changes each time, charging light will turn on, and then it turns on. After a few minutes though, it shuts off, after the first shut off, each period of getting it to work becomes shorter.

Example: First Session: 10 minutes. Second Session: 7 Minutes. Third Session: 4 Minutes. This resets after it hasn't been used for a couple hours.

Now I think I know why this is, the barrel jack of the charger and the charging port get very hot, quickly. Now, I've cleaned out the fans, but I still need to redo the 12 year old thermal paste that is probably non-existant at this point.

The keyboard is a mess, missing keys and all that.

I've since completely stripped the computer to give it the cleaning of it's life (12 years in a house with 2 cats and a dog and not a single cleaning!), it's currently still in pieces, but I can still plug the motherboard and screen in and get it to turn on and work.

Upon doing this, I discovered that one of the fans doesn't seem to want to work, unless perhaps, this is a feature.

Below you will find a video of me testing the fans, and discovering this very issue, I double checked all the connections too, 100% in place and connect, wires don't appear to be damaged either.

The laptop has two fans, one for the CPU and the other fan for the discrete GPU which is mounted on the motherboard.

It may be that initially the GPU fan will not turn on but if it is selected as the primary GPU (there's also an integrated Intel GPU in with the CPU) then it might not until Windows has been loaded. The Intel GPU will be the one used when in BIOS.

Both fans have 4 wires i.e. battery, ground, rpm sensor and temp sensor. You could check if the fan motor is OK by placing an Ohmmeter across the red and black connections (with the fan unplugged) and check if the motor is OK.

If it is then after that you may need the schematics to find out why it isn't turning on.

You're probably right about the DC-In jack (supplier example only) as what can happen is that the centre +ve pin of the jack, fractures internally, intermittently opening the circuit between the adapter and the motherboard. You will need smd soldering skills and tools to replace it if this is the case, as it cannot be repaired. It has to be replaced.

Alright, thankfully, I'm working on this with my IT teacher, who also teaches soldering! We did discuss doing it but didn't get a chance before the Holidays started. But we should have all of the supplies needed.

Okay, I am going to assume the fan is a 2-pin fan, If you have a multimeter you should check the connection on the board for the fan first, if it's getting proper voltage then probably a dead fan, Also check on the fan for the amount of voltage it needs, if it isn't getting voltage then you probably have bigger problems. If it is a 3 or more-pin fan then probably a feature since most of the fans I have usually get a signal to turn on if their 3 or more pin. For the overheating, I can't give a good answer but the first thing that jumps to mind for me is that there is a short circuit somewhere on the board that is causing it to get hot, or it could be something else like poor ventilation.
